Plot Summary
Wealthy art collector and kennel club member Archer Coe is found dead in his locked study, a bullet wound in his temple. The doors were bolted from inside, the windows sealed shut, and his prized Chinese show dogs howl in the kennel below. District Attorney Markham calls it suicide, but when the brilliant amateur detective Philo Vance (William Powell) examines the scene with his characteristic combination of urbane charm and razor intellect, he discovers that Archer was not only shot but also stabbed β making suicide impossible.
The question becomes: how could a killer have committed murder inside a completely sealed room and escaped without a trace? As Vance investigates, he uncovers a gallery of suspects with compelling motives. Archer’s own brother Brisbane had been feuding bitterly with him over family business. Archer’s former fiancΓ©e Hilda Lake (Mary Astor) broke their engagement under mysterious circumstances. A jealous rival collector coveted Archer’s prized Chinese artifacts. Multiple business associates nursed financial grievances.
The case grows even more complex when Brisbane Coe is found dead under equally mysterious circumstances β another apparent impossibility. Using his razor-sharp deductive skills, forensic examination of wounds and ballistics, and a masterful reconstruction of the crime, Vance peels away layer after layer of deception. Director Michael Curtiz employs inventive camera work β including a remarkable bird’s-eye tracking shot through the interconnected rooms of the Coe mansion β and maintains a breathlessly brisk pace that transforms this S.S. Van Dine adaptation into a masterclass of detective cinema.
