Plot Summary

Paul Renard is a young French violinist who served in the trenches during World War I. In the chaos of battle, he killed a German soldier in hand-to-hand combat and then discovered on his victim’s body a letter revealing that the dead man, Walter Holderlin, was a gentle musician like himself β€” a man who loved music, was devoted to his parents, and deeply loved his fiancΓ©e Elsa. The discovery devastates Paul, and years after the war’s end, the guilt continues to torment him relentlessly.

Unable to find peace, Paul travels to the small German town where Walter lived, intending to confess his deed to Walter’s family and seek some form of absolution. But when he arrives and meets Walter’s elderly parents β€” his dignified father Dr. Holderlin and his gentle, grieving mother β€” and encounters Elsa, the beautiful young woman who was to have been Walter’s wife, Paul finds himself unable to speak the terrible truth.

Instead, Paul introduces himself as a friend of Walter’s from before the war, and the Holderlin family, starved of any connection to their beloved dead son, welcome him with overwhelming warmth and gratitude. As Paul spends time with the family, he discovers that their grief is as deep and genuine as his own guilt. Dr. Holderlin, magnificently played by Lionel Barrymore, has struggled against the bitter anti-French sentiment in his community, insisting that individuals should not be held responsible for the crimes of nations.

Paul and Elsa gradually fall in love, but their happiness is built on a foundation of deception that threatens to destroy everything. The tension between Paul’s growing love and his unbearable secret builds toward a climax of extraordinary emotional power, as the truth must finally emerge and all involved must find within themselves the capacity for the forgiveness that alone can heal the wounds of war.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?

The colorization of Broken Lullaby transforms Lubitsch’s anti-war masterpiece into a visually atmospheric experience β€” the grey and rain-washed streets of the small German town, the warm mahogany and deep green of Dr. Holderlin’s study, the crisp white and blue of church interiors where Paul seeks absolution, the earthen brown of war flashback trenches, the gentle pastels of Elsa’s dresses, the cool grey of memorial stones in the village cemetery, the warm amber of evening lamplight in the Holderlin household, the bright flowers on Walter’s grave, Phillips Holmes’s haunted pale face contrasting with the warmth of the family that unknowingly shelters his guilt. Historical Significance

Broken Lullaby represents a unique entry in the filmography of Ernst Lubitsch, who was primarily celebrated for sophisticated comedies and musicals. This deeply serious anti-war drama showed a different side of his genius and is considered by many critics to be his most emotionally powerful work. The film was produced during a period of intense anti-war sentiment in the early 1930s, alongside All Quiet on the Western Front and other films questioning the devastation of World War I. Lionel Barrymore’s performance is regarded as one of his finest. Despite critical acclaim, the film was not a commercial success, but its reputation has grown steadily over the decades. Through colorization, this profound meditation on war, guilt, and forgiveness is preserved for modern audiences.
