Plot Summary
Deep in the jungles of French Indochina, amid ancient temple ruins that hide secrets both archaeological and political, Mr. Kentaro Moto (Peter Lorre) operates under an elaborate disguise. Posing as a wandering holy man — complete with flowing robes and a convincing air of mystical authority — Moto has infiltrated a region where colonial politics, rebel insurgency, and international espionage create a volatile and dangerous atmosphere.
The arrival of two Americans disturbs the delicate balance. Bob Donavon (Robert Kent) is an adventurous newsreel cameraman looking for exciting footage in the exotic East. Victoria Mason (Rochelle Hudson) is a daring aviatrix whose parachute descent into the jungle makes her an instant celebrity among the local population — and an object of intense interest to several parties with agendas far more sinister than they initially reveal.
As Moto observes from behind his disguise, the true nature of the conspiracy begins to emerge. Foreign agents are using the temple ruins and the surrounding jungle as a staging ground for operations that threaten the colonial order. Rebel leaders are being manipulated by outside powers pursuing their own strategic interests. And hidden among the archaeologists, journalists, and colonial administrators are intelligence operatives whose loyalties are impossible to determine.
Moto’s investigation takes him through ancient temples where modern conspiracies unfold in shadowed chambers, through jungle camps where rebel fighters prepare for action, and through elegant colonial residences where polite conversation masks deadly intent. His disguise is eventually penetrated, forcing him to employ his formidable judo skills and quick thinking to survive confrontations with enemies who recognise too late the danger posed by the quiet little man they had dismissed as harmless. The climax unfolds amid the atmospheric temple ruins as Moto brings the conspiracy to a dramatic and decisive conclusion.

Historical Significance
Mr. Moto Takes a Chance was Norman Foster’s first contribution to the Mr. Moto series as director — he would go on to helm several more entries and become the series’ most important director. The film’s Indochina setting placed it at the heart of the colonial tensions that would eventually explode into the wars that reshaped Southeast Asia. Peter Lorre’s Mr. Moto — based on John P. Marquand’s novels — represented one of the few Asian protagonists in 1930s Hollywood cinema, and Lorre’s commitment to the role brought genuine intelligence and humanity to the character. The series was discontinued in 1939 as rising tensions with Japan made a Japanese hero politically unacceptable to American audiences. Through colorization, this atmospheric adventure has been preserved for modern audiences.

A: Lorre performs impressively physical action throughout the film — the judo sequences and the chase scenes demonstrate a commitment to physical performance that goes well beyond what was typical for 1930s mystery films.
Q: How does this compare to other Mr. Moto films?
