Plot Summary
Nick and Nora Charles are doing their best to settle into quiet domestic life with their adorable young son Nicky Jr. and the ever-mischievous wire fox terrier Asta. But murder has a way of finding the Charles family, and this time it arrives at the racetrack. During a day at the races, a jockey named Link Stephens is found shot dead in the showers beneath the grandstand, and the case immediately entangles a sordid web of wrestling promoters, crooked gamblers, and corrupt bookmakers who control the track’s underworld.
Despite Nora’s playful encouragement to stay out of trouble — delivered with her trademark cocktail in hand and a knowing smile — Nick is irresistibly drawn into the investigation. A crusading young reporter named Paul Clarke, who has been investigating racetrack corruption, may hold the key to the case, but his loyalties are complicated by his romantic involvement with the gambling ring. When Paul himself is murdered and the evidence begins pointing in multiple contradictory directions, Nick must untangle a labyrinth of blackmail, double-dealing, and corruption that reaches from the racetrack’s dingy back rooms to the city’s highest power brokers.
With his signature combination of cocktails, wisecracks, and deceptively casual interrogation technique, Nick Charles works through the suspect list while Nora matches him quip for quip and Asta contributes his own brand of canine chaos to every scene. The investigation leads through smoky nightclubs, elegant parlors, and rain-soaked back alleys before building to one of the series’ trademark dramatic reveals, where Nick gathers all the suspects together and, with characteristic showmanship, unmasks the killer in a brilliantly orchestrated scene of deduction and theatrical flair.
