Plot Summary

Barry Kane is an ordinary aircraft factory worker in wartime Los Angeles whose life is shattered in a single moment when a devastating fire engulfs his workplace, killing his best friend and leaving Barry as the prime suspect. A mysterious stranger named Frank Fry, who handed Barry a fire extinguisher filled with gasoline instead of water, has vanished without a trace. With the police convinced of his guilt and the FBI closing in, Barry goes on the run, determined to find Fry and the network of fifth columnists responsible for the sabotage.

Barry’s desperate cross-country pursuit takes him through a remarkable gallery of American landscapes and characters. He encounters a blind man who can sense his innocence, a circus troupe of sympathetic outcasts who shelter him from the law, and eventually the beautiful but skeptical Pat Martin, a billboard model he is forced to kidnap when she threatens to turn him in. As Pat gradually comes to believe Barry’s wild story, she becomes his partner in unmasking a sophisticated sabotage ring that reaches into the highest levels of American society.

Their investigation leads them to a lavish charity ball at the mansion of Charles Tobin, a wealthy and respected socialite who is secretly the mastermind behind the conspiracy to undermine the American war effort. The chase builds to an unforgettable climax atop the Statue of Liberty, where Barry confronts the real saboteur Frank Fry in a scene of almost unbearable tension as Fry dangles from Lady Liberty’s torch, his sleeve slowly tearing stitch by stitch, hundreds of feet above the ground. This classic movie is a thrilling wartime adventure about one man’s fight for justice across America.

Historical Significance

Saboteur was Hitchcock’s first film to span the entire American continent, establishing the cross-country chase format he would later perfect in his acknowledged masterpiece North by Northwest. Made during the early months of America’s involvement in World War II, the film reflected real anxieties about domestic sabotage and fifth column activity. The Statue of Liberty climax has become one of the most referenced and imitated scenes in cinema history, influencing everything from spy thrillers to action blockbusters. Norman Lloyd, who plays the saboteur Fry dangling from Liberty’s torch, later became one of Hollywood’s longest-working actors, continuing to act past his hundredth birthday. Otto Kruger delivers a chillingly sophisticated performance as Tobin, establishing the template for the urbane villain that would recur throughout Hitchcock’s career. Through professional colorization, this essential Hitchcock classic reaches new audiences.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Movie-Specific Questions

Q: Is this connected to Hitchcock’s Sabotage?
A: No, despite the similar titles, Saboteur (1942) and Sabotage (1937) are completely different films. Saboteur is an American wartime thriller about a cross-country chase, while Sabotage is a British film based on a Joseph Conrad novel set in London.

Q: Was the Statue of Liberty scene filmed on location?
A: The climactic sequence used a brilliant combination of studio sets, detailed miniatures, rear projection, and clever camera work to create the illusion of being hundreds of feet above the ground on the real Statue of Liberty.

Q: How does this compare to North by Northwest?
A: Saboteur is widely considered a predecessor to North by Northwest (1959), sharing the same basic structure: an innocent man wrongly accused, forced to flee across America while uncovering a conspiracy. Hitchcock refined many of Saboteur’s ideas seventeen years later.
