Plot Summary

Joe Pendleton is a talented boxer and aspiring saxophonist who is flying his private plane to a championship bout when an overzealous heavenly messenger named 7013 snatches his soul from his body a split-second before what the messenger believes will be a fatal crash. The only problem is that Joe would have survived the crash — the messenger made a premature extraction, and Joe was destined to live for many more years.

Mr. Jordan, a suave and sympathetic heavenly supervisor, recognises the error and attempts to return Joe to his body, only to discover that it has already been cremated. The only solution is to find Joe a suitable replacement body — someone who has recently died under circumstances that can be plausibly explained away. The search proves surprisingly difficult, as Joe has specific requirements: the body must be physically capable of winning the championship fight.

The body they finally settle on belongs to Bruce Farnsworth, a recently murdered millionaire whose corrupt wife and business secretary conspired to kill him. Joe takes over Farnsworth’s body and life, inheriting not only his fortune but his enemies. Complications multiply when Joe falls in love with Bette Logan, a beautiful young woman who came to Farnsworth’s estate to plead for her wrongly imprisoned father, and when his loyal trainer Corkle refuses to believe that the wealthy stranger claiming to be Joe is actually his old friend.
