Plot Summary

Johnny Dalton is a timid, underpaid bank teller who is hopelessly in love with his colleague Mildred Goodhue but too poor and too shy to propose marriage. His mundane existence takes an unexpected turn when he accidentally helps a bookmaker named Hot Horse Harris avoid a beating from thugs. Grateful for the rescue, Harris insists on repaying Johnny by placing bets on his behalf at the racetrack.

To Johnny’s astonishment, Harris’s tips prove spectacularly successful, and the mild-mannered teller suddenly finds himself in possession of a small fortune in gambling winnings. The windfall should solve all his problems — he can finally afford to marry Mildred, buy a decent home, and escape the drudgery of his underpaid position. The timing of Johnny’s sudden wealth could not be worse, as the bank discovers that a large sum of money has been embezzled from its accounts.
