Plot Summary
Mary Brooks’ father, who has been studying ancient tribes, falls into the hands of “the people of Zar, god of the Emerald Fingers.” Professor Brooks, an anthropologist researching ancient civilizations in the African jungle, disappears while investigating rumors of a mysterious tribe that worships a deity known as Zar, god of the Emerald Fingers. His daughter Mary, concerned for her father’s safety, sets out to find him, enlisting the help of local guides and eventually encountering Tarzan, the legendary lord of the jungle.
Tarzan helps Mary locate her father, rescues everyone from the High Priest of Zar, and takes Mary to his cave. Tarzan, familiar with the dangers of the jungle and aware of the sinister cult that worships Zar, agrees to help Mary find her father. Together they navigate treacherous terrain, face wild animals, and confront the cultists who hold Professor Brooks prisoner. The High Priest of Zar, a powerful and evil figure, seeks to use the professor’s knowledge for his own nefarious purposes.
As Tarzan and Mary battle the cultists and attempt to rescue Professor Brooks, they face numerous perils including traps, wild beasts, and the cult’s own warriors. Tarzan’s strength, jungle skills, and courage are tested repeatedly as he fights to protect Mary and rescue her father. Historical Significance
Released in 1933, Tarzan the Fearless represents the golden age of adventure serials and the continued popularity of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Tarzan character in cinema. Buster Crabbe, an Olympic swimmer turned actor, brought athletic credibility to the role of Tarzan, following in the footsteps of earlier Tarzan actors like Johnny Weissmuller. The film’s serial format, with its episodic structure and cliffhanger endings, reflected the popular entertainment style of the 1930s when serials were a staple of movie theaters.
The film’s premise of Tarzan battling an evil cult reflects the adventure genre’s fascination with exotic locations and mysterious ancient civilizations. The 1930s saw numerous adventure films and serials featuring heroes exploring remote corners of the world and confronting supernatural or quasi-supernatural threats. This fascination spoke to audiences’ desire for escapism during the Great Depression, offering vicarious adventure in distant lands.
Tarzan the Fearless, like other Tarzan films of the era, combined elements of action, romance, and exotic adventure while also exploring themes of civilization versus nature and the noble savage. The character of Tarzan, raised by apes and possessing both animal instincts and human morality, continued to resonate with audiences as a symbol of natural goodness untainted by corrupt civilization. Through modern colorization, this adventure serial reaches new audiences who can appreciate Buster Crabbe’s performance, its thrilling action, and its place in the history of adventure cinema.
