Plot Summary

Poland, 1807. The nation has been partitioned and erased from the map of Europe by its powerful neighbors, and the Polish people cling desperately to the hope that Napoleon Bonaparte (Charles Boyer), the all-conquering Emperor of France, will restore their homeland. When Napoleon’s Grande Armée passes through Poland on its way to face Russia, the Polish aristocracy sees an opportunity to win the Emperor’s favor and secure his support for Polish independence.

Marie Walewska (Greta Garbo) is a beautiful, virtuous young countess married to an elderly Polish nobleman. She is patriotic and idealistic, but she has no interest in politics or intrigue — until Polish leaders persuade her that she alone, through her extraordinary beauty and refinement, has the power to influence Napoleon and win his support for their cause. Reluctantly, Marie agrees to meet the Emperor.

What begins as a political mission transforms into a genuine and deeply passionate love affair. Napoleon, fascinated by Marie’s beauty and moved by her sincerity and devotion, falls genuinely in love with her — one of the few authentic emotional connections in his life of ambition and conquest. Marie, in turn, falls deeply in love with Napoleon, and their relationship produces a son, Alexandre.

But their love is caught in the machinery of history and imperial ambition. Napoleon’s political needs require him to divorce Empress Josephine and marry a Habsburg archduchess to secure a political alliance and produce a legitimate heir. Marie is devastated by the betrayal but bears it with grace and dignity. As Napoleon’s fortunes reverse — the disastrous Russian campaign, the defeat at Leipzig, the exile to Elba — Marie remains loyal, visiting him in exile and offering the unconditional love that his imperial court never provided. Their story becomes a meditation on the conflict between love and duty, between personal happiness and historical destiny.
