Plot Summary

Alison Courtland awakens in terror on a speeding train bound for Boston with absolutely no memory of how she got there, no recollection of buying a ticket or boarding, and a loaded revolver in her expensive handbag that she has never seen before. Frightened and disoriented, she contacts her husband Richard, who rushes to retrieve her and brings her back to their elegant, luxurious townhouse on New York’s Upper East Side. Richard is the picture of devoted concern — tender, patient, and endlessly solicitous — as he gently explains that Alison has been suffering from a nervous breakdown, that these blackouts and episodes of lost time are symptoms of a deteriorating mental condition that requires rest and careful treatment.

But Alison’s blackouts and terrifying episodes are not illness at all. Behind his mask of loving devotion, Richard Courtland is methodically, systematically drugging his wife with hypnotic substances and staging elaborate, carefully rehearsed scenarios designed to convince her — and eventually the doctors and the courts — that she is losing her mind.
