Plot Summary
London during the Second World War. William Davis runs a questionable correspondence school that promises to teach economics to anyone willing to pay the modest fees, despite Davis himself having only the most superficial understanding of the subject. His students are unsurprisingly unsuccessful, and his school is permanently on the verge of collapse.
Davis bears an unfortunate resemblance to a distinguished professor of economics who is involved in sensitive trade negotiations vital to the British war effort. When Nazi agents kidnap the real professor to sabotage the negotiations, they accidentally capture Davis instead — or rather, Davis accidentally stumbles into the role through a chain of farcical misunderstandings.
Suddenly, the incompetent correspondence school teacher finds himself at the center of wartime espionage. The British authorities believe he is the real professor and expect him to participate in high-level negotiations. The Nazi agents realize their mistake but decide that Davis — confused and compliant — might actually be useful to them. And Davis himself is too bewildered and too afraid to tell anyone the truth.
What follows is a farcical odyssey through wartime London as Davis tries to maintain his imposture while simultaneously avoiding the Nazi agents who want to use him, the British officials who expect brilliance from him, and the growing suspicion of a sharp-eyed female agent who senses that something is very wrong with the ‘professor.’
Davis’s accidental heroism escalates as his attempts to escape the situation keep pulling him deeper into the conspiracy. His very incompetence becomes his greatest asset — the spies cannot predict his actions because he has no idea what he is doing, and his random blundering repeatedly disrupts their carefully laid plans.

The colorization of The Black Sheep of Whitehall brings wartime London to atmospheric life — the deep gray and brown of London’s streets and buildings under wartime blackout conditions, the rich dark blue of government officials’ suits in the corridors of Whitehall, the warm amber of desk lamps in wood-paneled offices where vital negotiations take place, the khaki and olive of military uniforms seen throughout wartime London, the bright red of pillar boxes and double-decker buses providing spots of color amid the wartime austerity, the pale cream of important documents and treaty papers that the spies are desperate to obtain, the dark green and black of the Nazi agents’ clothing as they move through the shadows, the warm brown of the shabby correspondence school where Davis operates his dubious business, the deep blue-black of the blacked-out London night during dramatic chase sequences, and the bright golden morning light when the conspiracy is finally unraveled. Historical Significance
The Black Sheep of Whitehall marked an important transition in Will Hay’s career — it was his first film without his regular partners Moore Marriott and Graham Moffatt, and the first in which he took on co-directing responsibilities. The film was made at Ealing Studios, which would become the most celebrated comedy studio in British cinema history, and it represents an early example of the distinctly Ealing approach to comedy — witty, character-driven, and unmistakably British. The wartime setting allowed the comedy to serve a dual purpose — entertaining audiences during the grim realities of 1942 while also satirizing bureaucratic incompetence and reinforcing the message that even the most unlikely Briton could play a role in defeating the Nazi menace. The presence of John Mills, who would become one of the most respected actors in British cinema, adds dramatic weight to the comedy. Through colorization, this important example of British wartime comedy is preserved for modern audiences.
