Plot Summary
Griff Marat is a dedicated, idealistic parole officer in Los Angeles who believes passionately that rehabilitation works, that people who have served their time deserve a genuine second chance at life. His faith in the system is about to be tested to breaking point. When the alluring, worldly-wise Jenny Marsh is released from prison after serving five years as an accessory to a murder committed by her lover, Griff is assigned as her parole officer. Jenny is a woman hardened and embittered by bad choices and worse men, particularly the smooth, manipulative gambler Harry Wesson, the man whose violent temper got her sent to prison in the first place while he walked free.
Despite the strict professional rules forbidding any personal involvement between parole officers and their charges — rules Griff himself has always enforced without exception — he finds himself increasingly, dangerously drawn to Jenny as he watches her make genuine, stumbling efforts to rebuild her shattered life. She takes a menial job, keeps to her curfew, reports faithfully, and slowly begins to trust someone for the first time in years. Griff sees in her not the hardened criminal of her file but a vulnerable, intelligent woman who was exploited and abandoned by the man she loved.
Their carefully maintained professional relationship begins to crack under the pressure of undeniable mutual attraction. When Harry Wesson resurfaces from the shadows, oozing charm and menace in equal measure, he threatens to pull Jenny back into the underworld life she is fighting to escape. He wants her back, and he is willing to destroy her fragile new life to get her. Confronted by Harry’s violence and manipulation, Jenny kills him in a desperate struggle that may or may not be pure self-defense. Griff, now hopelessly in love with the woman he was supposed to objectively supervise, makes the fateful, career-destroying decision to help her conceal the crime and flee with her across state lines, abandoning everything he has built — his career, his principles, his identity as a man of law — for a woman the system says he should never have loved.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?
Shockproof was originally filmed in black and white, its film noir visual style expertly exploiting deep shadows, rain-slicked streets, and oppressive urban nightscapes to build relentless tension. This professionally colorized restoration brings frame-by-frame precision to the moody, neon-lit streets of late-1940s Los Angeles, the stark contrast between Griff’s respectable daytime world of offices and courtrooms and the dangerous nighttime encounters in dimly lit apartments and smoky bars, and the increasingly desperate cross-country flight of the doomed lovers through the American landscape. The colorized version adds emotional intensity to this restored classic film. Now also available in colour.

Historical Significance
Shockproof was directed by Douglas Sirk during his early American career, years before he became universally celebrated for his masterful, subversive melodramas of the 1950s including Magnificent Obsession, All That Heaven Allows, and Written on the Wind. The screenplay was co-written by the legendary Samuel Fuller, whose raw, visceral, uncompromising style is powerfully evident in the film’s unflinching treatment of crime, desire, and institutional corruption. The pairing of Sirk’s visual sophistication with Fuller’s street-level intensity creates a uniquely compelling film noir that film scholars have increasingly recognized as an important early work in both directors’ careers. Through professional colorization, this stylish noir reaches new audiences.
