Plot Summary
William Porter is a railway-obsessed buffoon whose family has used their connections to get him a stationmaster’s position — at Doghatch, the most remote, derelict, and hopeless station in the northern Irish countryside. No train has stopped at Doghatch in living memory. The platform is overgrown with weeds. The station building is falling apart. And the two existing staff — the ancient, toothless, and magnificently unhelpful Harbottle and the rotund, lazy, and magnificently greedy Albert — have no intention of doing any actual work.
Porter arrives determined to transform Doghatch into a model railway station, but his efforts are immediately undermined by the complete absence of passengers, the total indifference of his staff, and the deeply unsettling local legend about One-Eyed Joe, a headless miller whose ghostly presence is said to haunt the station and its surroundings. Strange noises in the night, unexplained lights in the abandoned station buildings, and the terrified warnings of the local population all suggest that Doghatch is indeed haunted.
The truth is rather more dangerous than ghosts. A gang of gun-runners has been using the abandoned station as a base for their smuggling operation, and the ghost story has been deliberately maintained to keep everyone away. Porter’s bumbling attempts to revitalize the station threaten to expose the entire criminal enterprise.
The collision between Porter’s oblivious enthusiasm, Harbottle’s cunning self-preservation, Albert’s insatiable appetite, and the gun-runners’ desperate attempts to get rid of the new stationmaster produces comedy of the highest order, building to a spectacular climax involving a runaway train, a frantic chase across the Irish countryside, and one of the most thrilling and funny action sequences in the history of British cinema.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?
The colorization of Oh, Mr. Porter! reveals the glorious Irish countryside and decrepit charm of Doghatch station in beautiful detail — the lush emerald green of the Irish hillsides and meadows surrounding the forgotten station, the weathered grey-brown timber and faded cream paint of the dilapidated station buildings slowly surrendering to nature, the deep rust-red and forest green of the vintage railway rolling stock, the warm amber of oil lanterns casting flickering light in the station office where Porter attempts to impose order on chaos, the soft grey mist that drifts across the Irish landscape lending supernatural atmosphere to the ghost scenes, the bright blue of Porter’s proud new stationmaster’s uniform contrasting absurdly with the desolation around him, the deep brown of mud-splattered country roads, the warm golden sunshine that breaks through clouds to illuminate the spectacular runaway train climax, the dark greens and browns of the countryside racing past the out-of-control locomotive, and the warm red brick of the wind tunnel where the memorable opening sequence unfolds.
