Plot Summary
Larry Todd is a smooth-voiced nightclub singer in Havana whose easy-going lifestyle takes a dangerous turn when he accidentally witnesses a murder committed by a jealous gangster. Suddenly on the run for his life, Larry teams up with his bumbling but well-meaning best friend Myron Mertz, a hapless busboy with an extraordinary talent for causing chaos in any situation. The two flee through the streets of Havana dodging hitmen, with Myron’s panicked antics creating as many problems as they solve.
Their escape route leads them to Mary Carroll, a beautiful and mysterious woman who has just inherited a crumbling castle on a remote Caribbean island called Lost Island. The castle comes with a dark reputation — locals whisper of ghosts, family curses, and mysterious disappearances spanning generations. Despite the terrifying warnings, Mary must visit the island to claim her inheritance, and Larry and Myron see an opportunity to hide from the killers by tagging along. The trio boards a creaky ship bound for the island, with the gangsters secretly following in pursuit.
Once they arrive at the sprawling, cobweb-draped castle, things go from bad to genuinely terrifying. Ghostly apparitions drift through dark corridors, secret passages open behind ancient bookcases, and sinister figures lurk behind every creaking door. Myron’s cowardly reactions to each supernatural encounter provide a nonstop stream of physical comedy, while Larry’s attempts to remain suave and unflappable in the face of genuine horror collapse hilariously. The castle’s dark history slowly reveals itself as the trio stumbles upon hidden rooms and disturbing family portraits, and the question of whether the ghosts are real or part of a criminal plot to steal Mary’s inheritance builds to a wildly entertaining climax that includes a legendary surprise cameo appearance.

Historical Significance
Scared Stiff is a loose remake of the 1940 Bob Hope comedy The Ghost Breakers and features one of Carmen Miranda’s last screen appearances, showcasing her incomparable energy and showmanship. Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis were at the absolute peak of their phenomenally popular partnership when this film was made, and the movie showcases their effortless chemistry — Martin’s cool crooning perfectly counterbalances Lewis’s manic physical comedy. Director George Marshall, a veteran of comedy filmmaking, keeps the pace brisk and the gags flying. A surprise cameo by Bob Hope and Bing Crosby at the film’s conclusion delighted original audiences and remains one of the most memorable moments in 1950s comedy. Through professional colorization, this beloved comedy horror classic reaches new audiences.
