Plot Summary

Commander P.J. Richardson is a decorated submarine officer consumed by an obsession that threatens to destroy him and everyone under his command. A year earlier, his boat was sunk in the treacherous Bungo Straits off the Japanese coast by a deadly destroyer using a devastating new tactic, and Richardson was the sole senior officer to survive. While recovering stateside, he has spent every waking hour studying charts, analyzing attack patterns, and devising a revolutionary countermeasure that he believes can defeat the killer destroyer — but the Navy considers the Bungo Straits a death trap and refuses to send another submarine there.

When Richardson is unexpectedly given command of the USS Nerka, he displaces Lieutenant Jim Bledsoe, the boat’s popular and capable executive officer who had been promised the command. From the moment Richardson steps aboard, tension crackles through every compartment. He relentlessly drills the crew on a mysterious crash-dive and rapid-fire torpedo maneuver, pushing exhausted men to the breaking point without ever explaining the purpose of the strange exercises. The crew grows increasingly resentful, and Bledsoe finds himself caught between loyalty to his new captain and his responsibility to protect the men.

When Richardson defies direct orders and steers the Nerka toward the forbidden Bungo Straits on what appears to be a personal mission of revenge, Bledsoe must decide whether to support a commanding officer who may be brilliant or insane. Deep beneath the Pacific, with depth charges thundering overhead and the killer destroyer hunting them, the two powerful men finally confront each other in a battle of wills as dangerous as any enemy engagement. The climactic submarine duel in the narrow straits delivers some of the most intense underwater warfare ever filmed.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?

Run Silent, Run Deep was originally filmed in stark black and white, perfectly suited to the claustrophobic interiors of a World War II submarine. This professionally colorized restoration transforms every scene with frame-by-frame precision, from the cold grey-blue of the Pacific waters and the menacing silhouette of the Japanese destroyer to the warm amber lighting inside the submarine’s cramped control room and the blinding white flash of depth charge explosions. The torpedo attack sequences gain visceral new power in color, with green-tinted periscope views, fiery orange detonations against the ocean surface, and the red emergency lighting that bathes the crew during silent running. Period uniforms, naval insignia, and the intricate instrument panels of the submarine all benefit from the careful color restoration. The colorized version adds visceral intensity to this restored classic film. Now also available in colour.

Historical Significance

Run Silent, Run Deep paired two of Hollywood’s biggest leading men, Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster, in their only film together, creating an on-screen rivalry that reportedly mirrored real tensions between the two strong-willed stars. Based on Commander Edward L. Beach Jr.’s bestselling 1955 novel drawn from actual submarine warfare experience in the Pacific, the film brought unprecedented authenticity to the submarine genre. Director Robert Wise, who would go on to direct West Side Story and The Sound of Music, used real Naval footage and technical advisors to create some of the most realistic underwater combat sequences of the era. The film is widely considered one of the finest submarine movies ever made, alongside Das Boot and The Enemy Below, and its influence can be seen in every submarine thriller that followed. Jack Warden and Don Rickles both deliver memorable early dramatic performances as crew members. Through professional colorization, this taut WWII thriller reaches new audiences who can experience its claustrophobic tension and powerful performances with fresh visual impact.
