Plot Summary

John Triton (Edward G. Robinson) was once a successful vaudeville mentalist performing a fake mind-reading act with his partner and closest friend, dazzling audiences with tricks and sleight of hand that were nothing more than clever showmanship. But when his predictions start coming terrifyingly, inexplicably true — first small things, then catastrophic events he is powerless to prevent — his life unravels completely. The gift destroys his partnership, drives away the woman he loves, and leaves him a broken, haunted shell of the confident performer he once was. Now a shattered man living in isolation, Triton has foreseen something that brings him out of hiding: the death of Jean Courtland (Gail Russell), the young daughter of his former partner, on a specific date that is rapidly approaching. Jean’s devoted fiancé Elliott Carson (John Lund) and the police are deeply skeptical of this wild claim from a seemingly disturbed old man, but Triton’s documented track record of devastatingly accurate predictions — including foreseeing deaths, financial disasters, and natural catastrophes with uncanny precision — cannot be easily dismissed. As the predicted date draws inexorably closer, Elliott and a sharp-minded detective race to determine whether Triton is a genuine prophet burdened with a terrible gift, or a clever manipulator orchestrating events to match his own predictions. The tension escalates relentlessly as every attempt to change the future, every precaution taken to protect Jean, seems only to bring her closer to the fate Triton has seen in his visions, as if destiny itself is working to fulfill the prophecy regardless of human intervention.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?

This colorized version of Night Has a Thousand Eyes enhances the film’s unique blend of supernatural atmosphere and noir-tinged suspense with rich visual detail. The moody interiors of Triton’s reclusive dwelling, with its drawn curtains and dim lighting, contrast powerfully with the bright, elegant world of the Courtland family that Jean inhabits. The original black and white film captured the noir-tinged tension beautifully, but the professionally colorized restoration reveals the nighttime cityscapes bathed in the glow of neon and streetlights, the warm wood-paneled interiors of police precincts and private clubs, and Robinson’s tortured, weather-beaten expressions with frame-by-frame precision. The supernatural elements gain an eerie visual quality in color, as Triton’s visions are set against increasingly unsettling atmospheric tones. Watch this restored classic film in eerie, captivating color. Now also available in colour.

Historical Significance

Night Has a Thousand Eyes is based on a novel by Cornell Woolrich, the undisputed master of suspense fiction whose work also inspired Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window, François Truffaut’s The Bride Wore Black, and dozens of other film adaptations. Woolrich’s ability to create unbearable tension from seemingly impossible situations reaches a peak in this story, which poses the terrifying question: what if you could see the future but were powerless to change it? Edward G. Robinson, universally known for his tough-guy gangster roles in films like Little Caesar and Key Largo, delivers one of his most sympathetic and deeply nuanced performances as the tormented clairvoyant, conveying the crushing weight of unwanted knowledge with remarkable subtlety and emotional depth. Director John Farrow, father of actress Mia Farrow, creates a uniquely unsettling atmosphere that seamlessly blends film noir’s visual style and fatalistic worldview with genuine supernatural elements, creating a film that defies easy categorization. Gail Russell, one of the most hauntingly beautiful actresses of the era, brings a vulnerable quality to Jean that makes her endangered status deeply affecting. The colorization adds a compelling new dimension to this underappreciated and genuinely disturbing thriller.
