Plot Summary

On the stroke of midnight, New Year’s Eve 1947, Broadway star Sheila Page shoots and kills her husband Barney. Standing over his body in shock and despair, she makes a desperate wish — if only she could live the year over again, she would change everything, prevent the chain of events that led to this terrible moment. Impossibly, miraculously, her wish is granted. The clock turns back to January 1st, 1947, and Sheila finds herself starting the year over with complete knowledge of everything that is going to happen.

Armed with her foreknowledge, Sheila sets about systematically preventing the disasters she knows are coming. She tries to avoid the people who will cause trouble — the destructive poet William Williams, whose toxic influence over Barney led to alcoholism and infidelity; the conniving actress who stole her role and her husband’s attention. She tries to steer Barney away from his self-destructive path and save their marriage before it shatters.

But changing the past proves far more difficult than Sheila imagined. Every alteration she makes creates unforeseen consequences. Avoiding one danger leads to another. The people whose behavior she tries to change respond in unexpected ways to her inexplicable foreknowledge. And the fundamental character flaws that caused the original disasters — Barney’s weakness, William’s destructiveness, her own inability to let go — remain unchanged no matter what external circumstances she manipulates.

As the months tick by and Sheila watches her carefully constructed alternative timeline begin to crumble, she faces the terrible possibility that some tragedies cannot be prevented — that the outcome she is desperately trying to avoid may be woven into the fabric of fate itself. The film builds to its devastating New Year’s Eve conclusion with mounting dread and genuine philosophical weight.

Historical Significance

Repeat Performance is a remarkably original film that anticipated the time-loop concept decades before Groundhog Day made it a mainstream genre. Its combination of film noir fatalism with fantasy elements was daring for 1947 and gives the film a unique quality that distinguishes it from every other noir of its era. The film features the screen debut of Richard Basehart, who would become one of the most respected actors of his generation. Joan Leslie, a major Warner Bros. star, delivers one of her finest performances in a role that demands enormous range. The film’s philosophical exploration of free will versus determinism gives it intellectual substance beyond its genre framework. Through colorization, this uniquely innovative film noir is preserved for modern audiences.

Q: Who is Richard Basehart?
A: Richard Basehart went on to become a major dramatic actor, starring in Federico Fellini’s La Strada and the television series Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. His electrifying debut in Repeat Performance immediately marked him as an exceptional talent.
