Plot Summary

Texas, the years following the Civil War. Colonel Templeton Lambeth (Thurston Hall) is a former Confederate officer who has lost his fortune during the war and is travelling west with his daughter Rill (Barbara Hale) to start a new life on a Texas ranch. To protect Rill from the dangers of frontier travel — bandits, lawless men, and the general hazards of the untamed West — the Colonel disguises her as a boy, hoping to avoid the attention that a young woman travelling through outlaw territory would inevitably attract.

Pecos Smith (Robert Mitchum), a tough, capable, and quietly charming Texas cowboy, encounters the Lambeths during their journey and quickly sees through Rill’s disguise — though he finds the situation more amusing than alarming. He agrees to help the Lambeths reach their destination, and a slow-burning romance develops between Pecos and Rill, complicated by the fact that she must maintain her male disguise while increasingly finding it difficult to suppress her feelings for the rugged cowboy.

The journey becomes dangerous when they cross paths with a gang of cattle rustlers and outlaws who are terrorising the region west of the Pecos River.
