Plot Summary
In pre-revolutionary France, the dashing Charles, Duc de Villiers (Nelson Eddy), is living in disguise as a bondservant after being condemned as a political rebel for his outspoken advocacy of liberty and the rights of the common people. When the beautiful and spirited Mariana de Doubleval (Jeanette MacDonald) purchases his bond at a slave market, neither realizes how deeply their fates will intertwine or how their initial clash of temperaments will blaze into passionate love. Charles must maintain his humble disguise while secretly organizing his fellow bondsmen for an eventually uprising, all while fighting his growing feelings for the aristocratic woman who technically owns him. Aboard a ship bound for New Orleans, their initial antagonism gives way to passionate love, expressed through glorious duets that fill the ship’s deck with music that stuns even the hardened crew. But when Charles’s rebel sympathizers seize the ship in a daring mutiny and redirect it to a remote tropical island to establish a free colony, Mariana must choose between her privileged world of aristocratic comfort and the man she loves who dreams of building a society based on equality. On their island paradise, surrounded by lush vegetation and crystal waters, the colonists build a new society based on liberty and equality, with Charles as their natural leader. But their fragile utopia faces threats from both the French crown, which sends a warship to reclaim its subjects, and the gathering storm of the Revolutionary government that would consume France itself. As these dangers converge, Charles and Mariana’s love is tested by the same forces that are reshaping the entire world.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?
This colorized version of New Moon reveals the opulent French estates with their manicured gardens and gilded interiors, the dramatic ocean voyage with its rolling seas and billowing sails, and the lush tropical island with its emerald vegetation and golden beaches in stunning new visual beauty. The elaborate period costumes — from the aristocratic gowns and powdered wigs of the French scenes to the simpler but colorful clothing of the island colony — are rendered with exquisite detail. The original black and white film captured the musical grandeur effectively, but the professionally colorized restoration brings out the cerulean waters of the tropical seas, the warm candlelight of the shipboard scenes, and the exotic island settings where the colonists build their new world with frame-by-frame precision. The contrast between the artificial splendor of French aristocratic life and the natural beauty of the island paradise becomes a powerful visual theme in the colorized version. Historical Significance
New Moon was the seventh of eight films pairing Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy, based on Sigmund Romberg’s beloved 1928 operetta with a book by Oscar Hammerstein II, who would later revolutionize the American musical with Rodgers and Hammerstein. The film features some of their most celebrated duets, including the achingly romantic “Wanting You,” the passionate “Lover, Come Back to Me,” and the stirring anthem “Stouthearted Men,” which became an unofficial fight song used at rallies and gatherings across America. These songs became enduring standards that are still performed in concert halls and on Broadway stages today. At the peak of their popularity, MacDonald and Eddy were MGM’s most profitable screen team, and their combined vocal power was unmatched by any other screen pairing in cinema history. The film was produced by the legendary Robert Z. Leonard, who understood perfectly how to showcase his stars’ extraordinary talents while maintaining the narrative drive and romantic tension that made their films so popular. The colorization brings visual splendor to this glorious musical adventure, enhancing the romantic sweep of the story and the exotic beauty of its settings.
