Plot Summary

Brother Orchid opens with Little John Sarto (Edward G. Robinson), a racketeer who steps down from running his criminal organization to travel Europe and cultivate the fine things in life. While he is gone, his ambitious lieutenant Jack Buck (Humphrey Bogart) consolidates power and takes over the gang. When Sarto returns to reclaim his empire, Buck’s men shoot him and leave him for dead on a rural roadside.

Stumbling nearly unconscious to a nearby monastery, Sarto is taken in and nursed back to health by a community of gentle monks. He initially plans to recover and then leave — but something in the quiet rhythm of monastic life and the genuine goodness of the Brothers begins to affect even his hardened criminal heart. Meanwhile, Flo Addams (Ann Sothern), Sarto’s loyal girlfriend, is being pressured by Clarence Fletcher (Ralph Bellamy), a clean-cut rival determined to win her away.

Directed by Lloyd Bacon with a sharp eye for both comedy and character, Brother Orchid is a fascinatingly unusual entry in the Warner Bros. gangster canon. Robinson’s performance is a masterclass in comic timing and unexpected pathos — the tough mob boss gradually finding something worth protecting in the peace of the cloister makes for one of the most charming character arcs in classic film history.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?

Few classic film pairings are as electrically charged as Edward G. Robinson and Humphrey Bogart, and Brother Orchid captures both stars at the peak of their Warner Bros. prime. In the original black and white print, the visual world of 1940 Manhattan and the tranquil monastery countryside blends into the same grey palette. In this professionally restored and colorized version, those two worlds are vividly distinct — the dark city streets and smoky club interiors of the gangster scenes stand in sharp contrast to the sun-dappled greens and warm stone tones of the monastic setting.

The frame-by-frame colorization pays particular attention to the contrast between environments that drives the film’s comedy and pathos. Robinson’s impeccably tailored gangster suits read very differently against the natural tones of the monastery garden, and in color the comedy of his transformation from mob boss to reluctant Brother carries visual weight that the black and white original could only suggest.

Bogart is razor-sharp as the treacherous Buck, and in this colorized and restored edition his scenes crackle with the contained menace that would soon make him one of Hollywood’s greatest stars. For lovers of classic film Hollywood — whether you know these stars from later achievements or are encountering them for the first time in their early Warner Bros. period — Brother Orchid in color is an irresistible buy. This classic movie is also available in colour for international audiences.
