Plot Summary

Phil Doyle (Errol Flynn) and Ellen Doyle (Eleanor Parker) are a divorced couple who share custody of their adorable and precocious young daughter Flip (Patti Brady). Despite their separation, the irrepressible Flip is absolutely determined to reunite her parents and she employs every trick in a child’s considerable arsenal to bring them back together, from faking illnesses to arranging “accidental” encounters. Phil, a successful commercial artist with a roving eye and an apartment full of modern paintings, and Ellen, who has attracted the persistent and increasingly unwelcome attentions of the smooth-talking suitor Jack Beasley (Forrest Tucker), find themselves constantly thrown together by their scheming daughter’s inventive machinations. Complicating matters enormously is Phil’s eccentric and endlessly meddling friend Luigi (S.Z. Sakall), a Hungarian restaurateur who provides comic relief and romantic advice in equal measure, and their loyal housekeeper Cozy (Hattie McDaniel), both of whom secretly root for reconciliation and do their part to nudge the stubborn ex-spouses back together. As Flip’s increasingly elaborate schemes create hilarious misunderstandings — including a particularly memorable episode involving a stolen hat, a fabricated emergency, and a romantic dinner that goes spectacularly wrong — Phil and Ellen begin to realize that their love for each other never really ended. The jealousy sparked by each other’s romantic interests only confirms what everyone around them already knows: these two belong together, if only their pride would let them admit it.

Historical Significance

Never Say Goodbye showed a delightfully different side of Errol Flynn, universally known for his swashbuckling adventures in films like The Adventures of Robin Hood and Captain Blood, proving he could be equally charming and naturally funny in domestic comedy. Eleanor Parker, who would earn three Academy Award nominations during her distinguished career, sparkles with intelligence and wit as his equally stubborn ex-wife, and the chemistry between the two leads drives the film’s romantic comedy to thoroughly entertaining heights. The film features endearing performances from the beloved character actor S.Z. “Cuddles” Sakall, whose trademark jowl-shaking reactions and fractured English made him one of Hollywood’s most lovable supporting players, and the iconic Hattie McDaniel, who brings warmth and knowing humor to every scene. Young Patti Brady is irresistible as the matchmaking daughter, delivering a performance of remarkable naturalness that anchors the film’s emotional core. The colorization adds visual warmth and period charm to this delightful postwar comedy, allowing modern audiences to fully appreciate the elegance of its 1940s settings.
