Plot Summary
Radio broadcaster Larry Lawrence (Bob Hope) accidentally stumbles into a murder plot in a New York hotel when he fires a shot at what he thinks is an intruder, only to discover a dead body in his closet. Convinced the police will blame him, Larry desperately needs to disappear. Fortunately, beautiful heiress Mary Carter (Paulette Goddard) is sailing that very night for Cuba to claim an inherited castle on Black Island, and Larry stows away aboard her ship with his resourceful valet Alex (Willie Best).
Mary has been warned repeatedly to abandon her inheritance — a mysterious voice on a radio broadcast threatened her life, and a sinister stranger named Parada (Paul Lukas) has been lurking near her hotel with vague but menacing warnings. The castle, locals insist, is cursed and haunted by the ghost of a former owner who practiced voodoo. Mary is undeterred, but as the voyage progresses, the threats become more concrete and more deadly.
Upon arrival at Black Island, Larry, Mary, and Alex explore the decaying castle by candlelight. The halls are filled with cobwebs, secret passages, and unexplained sounds. A genuine zombie (Noble Johnson) stalks the corridors, doors slam by themselves, and ghostly apparitions appear in mirrors. Larry’s wisecracks grow increasingly panicked as real danger intersects with supernatural terror. Behind the haunting lies a very human conspiracy — someone is using the ghost legend to keep people away from the castle, which conceals a valuable treasure hidden by Mary’s ancestors. The climax brings Larry face to face with both the living villains and their undead enforcer in a thrilling confrontation.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Movie-Specific Questions
Q: Is The Ghost Breakers a horror film or a comedy?
A: It brilliantly combines both genres. The horror elements — including a genuine zombie, a haunted castle, and secret passages — are played straight enough to create real suspense, while Bob Hope’s wisecracks and panicked reactions provide constant comic relief, creating the perfect balance of scares and laughs.
Q: How does this film connect to The Cat and the Canary?
A: Both films pair Bob Hope and Paulette Goddard in spooky old-house mysteries with comedy. The Ghost Breakers builds on the formula with more exotic locations, bigger scares, and sharper humor, making it the superior entry in the duo’s horror-comedy collaborations.
Q: What role does the zombie play in the story?
A: The zombie, played by Noble Johnson, is one of cinema’s earliest and most atmospheric undead figures. Used as a guardian by the villains to protect the castle’s secrets, it provides genuinely chilling moments that contrast perfectly with Hope’s terrified comedy.
