Plot Summary

Geoffrey Carroll (Humphrey Bogart) is a talented painter who falls passionately in love with Sally Morton (Barbara Stanwyck) while on holiday in Scotland. There is one complication — Geoffrey is already married. He returns to his wife’s home and shortly afterward, the first Mrs. Carroll dies under circumstances attributed to a heart condition. Geoffrey marries Sally, and they settle into an apparently happy life in the English countryside with Geoffrey’s daughter Beatrice from his first marriage.

For a time, the marriage seems blissful. Geoffrey paints with renewed inspiration, and Sally embraces her role as wife and stepmother. But disturbing signs begin to emerge. Sally notices that Geoffrey has painted a portrait of her as an ‘Angel of Death’ — a disturbing, ghoulish rendering that seems to express something deeply troubled in his psyche. She also learns that he painted a similar portrait of his first wife shortly before her death.

Sally begins experiencing mysterious illness — episodes of weakness, nausea, and disorientation that she initially attributes to stress but that grow progressively more severe. When Cecily Latham (Alexis Smith), a glamorous younger woman, enters Geoffrey’s social circle and captures his artistic attention, Sally recognizes with mounting horror the pattern that is repeating itself. Geoffrey has found a new muse and a new obsession, and Sally is becoming inconvenient. With the help of family friend and pharmacist Dr. Tuttle, Sally begins to suspect that her husband is slowly poisoning her, just as he poisoned his first wife. The film builds to a tense climax as Sally must confront a husband who is charming on the surface but homicidally unhinged beneath, in a desperate fight for her survival against a man who views murder as simply the necessary prelude to his next creative period.

Historical Significance

The Two Mrs. Carrolls, based on Martin Vale’s successful stage play, gave Humphrey Bogart one of his most unusual and challenging roles — a villain rather than a hero. The film was actually completed in 1945 but held back from release until 1947, reportedly because Warner Bros. was reluctant to present their biggest male star as a wife-poisoner during the height of his romantic leading-man popularity. The pairing of Bogart and Stanwyck, two of the most commanding screen presences of their era, creates a thriller of remarkable intensity. Through colorization, this atmospheric gothic thriller has been preserved for modern audiences who appreciate psychologically complex suspense and star-powered performances.

A: The combination of two of Hollywood’s most intense screen presences creates remarkable dramatic tension. Stanwyck’s growing terror and Bogart’s barely concealed mania make their scenes together electrifying to watch.

Q: How does the colorization enhance the gothic thriller atmosphere?
