Plot Summary

Mary Peppertree (Deanna Durbin) arrives in Washington, D.C., to take up a new job as a White House telephone switchboard operator. With her friendly manner and pleasant voice, she quickly becomes a favorite among the staff — and inadvertently draws the attention of three very different men who each want to win her hand.

The first is Lt. Tom Farrington (Edmond O’Brien), a Navy officer whose romantic persistence is matched only by his inability to think of a quiet approach. The second is David Paxton (Don Taylor), a young government lawyer with a talent for getting into trouble almost as great as Tom’s. The third is Phillip Manning (Jeffrey Lynn), a reserved official with the most conventional approach of the three — and perhaps the least chance of success.

When Mary’s kind friend Justice Peabody (Harry Davenport) becomes entangled in her romantic complications, the situation escalates all the way to the Oval Office. The President himself — glimpsed only in affectionate caricature, as was the Hollywood convention — takes a benevolent interest in sorting out the romantic crisis of his much-liked telephone operator.

For all its comic mayhem, For the Love of Mary is also a warm and slightly melancholy film — the last in Deanna Durbin’s long run of Universal musicals, and one that feels, in retrospect, like a fond farewell from a star saying goodbye to the screen persona that made her famous.

Deanna Durbin was twenty-six when For the Love of Mary was filmed, and the natural confidence of a woman at the peak of her maturity colors every scene. Edmond O’Brien, whose career would shortly turn toward the harder edges of film noir, brings a pleasingly rough-edged energy to the most overtly comic of the three suitors. Don Taylor, who would later become a respected director himself, brings charm and likability to the role of the slightly more reliable rival. Harry Davenport, one of Hollywood’s most beloved character actors, gives the film its warmest and most human moments as the elderly justice who genuinely cares about Mary’s happiness.

Historical Significance

For the Love of Mary was Deanna Durbin’s penultimate film for Universal, followed only by Lady on a Train (1945) — and at the time of the film’s release, very few people knew that Durbin was already planning to retire permanently from Hollywood. She was twenty-seven, had been a major star for more than a decade, and had simply had enough. She left Hollywood in 1949 and never returned — a decision that became one of the most discussed voluntary retirements in film history. For the Love of Mary is therefore a valedictory film, full of the warmth and musical generosity that had defined her entire career. The restored colorized version makes this final chapter available with new visual clarity.
