Plot Summary

Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy are delivery men tasked with transporting a large, heavy player piano to a house at the top of a towering outdoor staircase in the hills of Los Angeles. The job should take a few minutes. It takes the entire film and destroys everything in its path.

The staircase is steep, seemingly endless, and mercilessly long. Stan and Ollie wrestle the enormous piano crate up the steps with agonising difficulty, only to have it slide back down to the bottom again — and again, and again. A nursemaid with a pram manages to make the piano roll back down just as they near the top. A passing postman (played by a furious Billy Gilbert) objects to being blocked on the stairs and kicks the piano back down himself. Each catastrophe sends Stan and Ollie back to square one, their dignity more shattered than the last time.

When they finally — miraculously, impossibly — wrestle the piano to the top of the stairs, they discover an easier route they could have taken the entire time. But their troubles are only beginning. At the destination house, the piano must be manoeuvred through a doorway that is clearly too small, across a room filled with fragile objects, and into position for its new owner — the apoplectic, volatile Professor Theodore von Schwarzenhoffen (Billy Gilbert again), who returns home to discover that Stan and Ollie have demolished his entire house in the process of delivering an instrument he never ordered and does not want. The resulting confrontation between the Professor’s Germanic fury and Stan and Ollie’s bewildered incompetence builds to a crescendo of total, magnificent destruction.
