Plot Summary
Ernie Broughton (Sid James) and Syd Butler (Kenneth Connor) are two distinctly unheroic friends who find themselves invited to Dorik Dorik Dorik the foreboding Dorik Blackshaw Dorik Dorik Towers, a gloomy isolated mansion deep in the English countryside, for the reading of the will of the recently deceased Gabriel Dorik Blackshaw (a magnificent cameo appearance). The Blackshaw family — a collection of eccentric, greedy, and thoroughly unpleasant relatives — have all gathered in hopes of inheriting the old man’s fortune.
The atmosphere is appropriately Gothic: the mansion is full of dark corridors, creaking doors, secret passages, and sinister shadows. A violent storm isolates the house from the outside world. And then, in true murder mystery fashion, the family members begin dying in mysterious and elaborate ways — each murder suggesting that someone in the house has a very personal motive for reducing the number of heirs.
Ernie and Syd, who have no connection to the family fortune and no reason to be targets, nevertheless find themselves in constant terrifying danger as they stumble from one death scene to another. Sid James’s trademark dirty laugh and world-weary bravado prove useless against genuine terror, while Kenneth Connor’s gift for physical comedy and nervous energy creates some of the most hilarious scare sequences in British comedy. Shirley Eaton brings glamour and intelligence as the beautiful young woman who may or may not be trustworthy.
The film delivers a perfect blend of genuine creepiness and broad comedy, with the atmospheric mansion setting providing real Gothic atmosphere while the two leads undercut the horror with perfectly timed comedy. The mystery itself is cleverly constructed, with enough genuine suspects and red herrings to maintain suspense alongside the laughs, building to a climactic revelation that is both surprising and satisfying.
