Plot Summary

In the harsh medieval world of the thirteenth century, the boy Ondřej is pledged to the Teutonic Knights by his father, a nobleman whose desperate prayer for his son’s survival during a childhood illness leads him to promise the boy to God’s service. The child is torn from everything he knows — home, family, the natural beauty of the Bohemian countryside — and delivered into a world of stone walls, rigid discipline, and religious fanaticism.

The Teutonic Order demands total obedience. Personal desire, individual thought, and human warmth are systematically crushed in favour of absolute submission to the Rule. The young Ondřej is shaped by this brutally austere environment, but something in his nature resists the Order’s attempt to extinguish his humanity. He is befriended by Armin, a fellow knight whose devotion to the Order is absolute — a man who has genuinely surrendered his individual will to the collective purpose and who sees in Ondřej a soul that can be saved through discipline.

But Ondřej cannot be contained. The memory of sunlight on meadows, of the warmth of human touch, of the freedom that was stolen from him as a child — these memories burn like a flame that the Order’s cold discipline cannot extinguish. He flees, journeying back through a medieval landscape of forests, rivers, and ruined castles to the estate where he was born.

What he finds there is not the home he remembers. His father is dead. The estate is now held by a young woman whose beauty and warmth represent everything the Order denied him. For a brief, intoxicating period, Ondřej experiences the sensual joy of the natural world — the warmth of love, the beauty of the changing seasons, the simple pleasure of living as a free human being.

But the Order does not release its servants. Armin follows, driven by a fanaticism that admits no compromise. His pursuit is relentless, his purpose absolute: to return Ondřej to the Order or destroy him. The confrontation between these two men — one who chose freedom and one who chose submission — becomes a battle for the meaning of human existence itself.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?

Vláčil’s extraordinary visual compositions — the austere stone corridors of the Teutonic castle, the sweeping Bohemian landscapes through which Ondřej flees, the warm golden light of the estate where freedom briefly blooms, the dark forests where pursuit and confrontation take place — are magnificently enhanced through expert colorization. The contrast between the cold, grey world of the Order and the warm, living world of nature and human feeling becomes visually breathtaking in full colour. Historical Significance

The Valley of the Bees is one of the supreme achievements of the Czech New Wave — the extraordinary flowering of Czech cinema in the 1960s that produced filmmakers of international stature. František Vláčil, whose Marketa Lazarová (1967) is widely regarded as the greatest Czech film ever made, brings the same extraordinary visual sense and philosophical depth to this companion piece. The film uses the medieval setting to explore themes that resonated powerfully in 1960s Czechoslovakia — the conflict between individual freedom and institutional authority, the price of obedience, and the human cost of ideological fanaticism. The Teutonic Knights serve as a metaphor that Czech audiences of the era understood perfectly. Through colorization, this masterpiece of world cinema has been preserved for modern audiences.
