Plot Summary

The Duke of Chartres is in love with Princess Henriette, but she seemingly wants nothing to do with him. The Duke, a nobleman in the court of Louis XV, has fallen deeply in love with Princess Henriette, but she has rejected his advances, treating him with disdain and indifference. Her refusal to acknowledge his affections wounds his pride and leads him to question whether he should continue pursuing her.

Eventually he grows tired of her insults and flees to England when Louis XV insists that the two marry. The King, seeking to strengthen political alliances through marriage, pressures the Duke to wed Princess Henriette despite her lack of interest. Rather than submit to a marriage without love, the Duke chooses exile, fleeing to England to escape both the unwanted marriage and Princess Henriette’s cruel treatment.

He goes undercover as Monsieur Beaucaire, the barber of the French Ambassador, and finds that he enjoys the freedom of a commoner’s life. Disguised as a commoner, the Duke experiences life without the privileges and responsibilities of nobility. He discovers a freedom he never knew as a duke, enjoying the simple pleasures of ordinary life and the absence of court intrigue and political pressure.

After catching the Duke of Winterset cheating at cards, he forces him to introduce him as a nobleman to Lady Mary, with whom he has become infatuated. When Lady Mary is led to believe that the Duke of Chartres is merely a barber she loses interest in him. She eventually learns that he is a nobleman after all and tries to win him back, but the Duke of Chartres opts to return to France and Princess Henriette who now returns his affection.
