Experience the deeply moving Song of Summer (1968) in stunning colorized HD. Directed by Ken Russell, this acclaimed BBC biographical drama tells the remarkable true story of the final years of the great English composer Frederick Delius, who spent the last decade of his life blind, paralysed, and unable to write — yet continued to create some of his most beautiful music through an extraordinary collaboration with Eric Fenby (Christopher Gable), a young Yorkshire musician who volunteered to serve as the dying composer’s amanuensis. Max Adrian gives a towering performance as Delius — tyrannical, brilliant, impossible, and utterly dependent on the patient young man who translates his musical visions into written scores. Set in the composer’s home in Grez-sur-Loing, France, this is a profound meditation on artistic creation, human devotion, and the transcendent power of music to triumph over physical destruction. Now available as a premium digital download for just €15.00 — DRM-free and yours to keep forever.

Plot Summary

Frederick Delius, one of England’s greatest composers, is living in exile in Grez-sur-Loing, a small village south of Paris. He is old, blind, and almost completely paralysed by the tertiary syphilis that has been destroying his body for years. His mind, however, remains brilliantly, terrifyingly alive. Music pours through his consciousness — orchestral works, choral pieces, sonatas — but he cannot see to write and cannot move to play. The greatest irony of his life is that his most fertile creative period has coincided with his physical helplessness.

Into this desperate situation comes Eric Fenby, a young musician from Scarborough who has worshipped Delius’s music since childhood and who volunteers, out of pure devotion, to travel to France and serve as the composer’s musical scribe. Fenby’s job is to sit at the piano, listen to Delius describe the music he hears in his head, play it back, correct it according to the composer’s instructions, and transcribe it into finished scores.

The task proves almost impossibly difficult. Delius is a perfectionist whose standards are ferocious — he knows exactly what he wants and explodes with rage when Fenby cannot immediately translate his internal musical language into sound. The old man is tyrannical, ungrateful, and relentlessly demanding. He treats Fenby with alternating cruelty and affection, pushing the young man to the limits of his patience and his musical ability.

Yet the collaboration produces extraordinary results. Piece by piece, note by agonising note, the music emerges — works of heartbreaking beauty wrested from silence and paralysis through sheer force of will and the selfless dedication of a young man who believes that preserving this music for the world matters more than his own comfort or pride. The relationship between the two men deepens into something complex and profound — not friendship exactly, but a bond forged in shared devotion to something greater than either of them.

Delius’s wife Jelka (Maureen Pryor) watches the collaboration with a mixture of gratitude and jealousy, and the household dynamics add another layer of emotional complexity to the extraordinary creative process unfolding within its walls.

Cast & Crew

Director: Ken Russell
Stars: Max Adrian, Christopher Gable, Maureen Pryor, David Collings

Max Adrian gives an unforgettable performance as Delius — capturing both the monstrous difficulty of the man and the undeniable greatness of the artist, making us understand why Fenby endured such treatment for the sake of the music. Christopher Gable is quietly superb as Fenby, his patience, frustration, and growing understanding rendered with beautiful subtlety. Ken Russell directs with unusual restraint, allowing the drama to emerge from the human relationships rather than from the visual flamboyance that would characterise his later work.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?

The serene beauty of the French countryside village — the composer’s garden where Delius is wheeled in his bath chair to listen to birdsong, the elegant but fading interiors of the house at Grez-sur-Loing, the dappled light filtering through the trees along the river Loing, and the warm, intimate spaces where the painstaking musical collaboration unfolds — is gorgeously enhanced through expert colorization. The visual contrast between the pastoral beauty of the setting and the physical devastation of the composer creates a poignant visual metaphor for the triumph of artistic spirit over bodily destruction. The period costumes and the lovingly detailed interiors are rendered with warm authenticity. Now also available in colour. Own this profoundly moving classic for just €15.00 — where the most beautiful music emerges from the deepest silence.

Historical Significance

Song of Summer is widely regarded as Ken Russell’s finest work and one of the greatest biographical dramas ever produced for television. Made for the BBC’s arts strand, it established Russell as a major talent and demonstrated that biographical film about composers could be dramatically compelling without sacrificing musical or historical authenticity. The film is based on Eric Fenby’s own memoir, Delius as I Knew Him, and Fenby served as a consultant on the production, ensuring its accuracy. The music of Delius — hauntingly beautiful, pastoral, and profoundly English despite the composer’s years of continental exile — provides a sublime soundtrack that gives the drama its transcendent quality. Russell would go on to greater commercial success with more flamboyant biographical films, but many critics consider this restrained, intimate work his masterpiece. Through colorization, this landmark of British television drama has been preserved for modern audiences.
