Plot Summary
Nancy Drew (Bonita Granville), the fearless, irrepressibly curious daughter of prominent attorney Carson Drew (John Litel), wins a contest sponsored by the local newspaper to become a cub reporter for the day. While her editor expects her to cover a routine assignment at the county fair, the irrepressible Nancy has far bigger ambitions — she immediately latches onto a real news story when she discovers evidence that a young woman named Elinor, who has been accused of poisoning a wealthy elderly man for his money, may in fact be completely innocent and the victim of a frame-up by the dead man’s own greedy relatives.
Despite her father’s increasingly exasperated objections and stern warnings to stay out of dangerous criminal matters, the tenacious Nancy enlists her loyal, long-suffering friend Ted Nickerson (Frankie Thomas, playing the character later known as Ned Nickerson) to help her investigate. Together they follow a trail of clues that leads from the newspaper morgue to shady back rooms, uncovering a web of forged wills, greedy scheming relatives, a corrupt insurance scheme, and hidden agendas that go far deeper than anyone suspected. Nancy’s quick wits and fearless determination repeatedly lead her into tight spots — sneaking into restricted areas, confronting hostile suspects, and following dangerous leads that a professional reporter would think twice about pursuing. As Nancy gets closer to the real truth, the actual murderers become desperate to silence her, putting both Nancy and the hapless Ted in genuine physical danger. A thrilling climax in which Nancy must use her intelligence rather than strength to escape a deadly trap brings the mystery to a satisfying conclusion. This classic movie captures the spirit of the beloved Nancy Drew mystery books with infectious energy and charm.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?
This colorized version of Nancy Drew… Reporter reveals the charming small-town America settings, the bustling newspaper offices, and the vintage fashion with delightful new visual warmth. The original black and white film captured the energetic mystery perfectly, but the professionally colorized restoration brings out the warm red brick and white clapboard of the small-town Main Street, the cluttered wooden desks and green-shaded lamps of the newspaper city room, Nancy’s fashionable late-1930s dresses and smart overcoats, the cheerful bunting and colorful booths of the county fair, and the cozy, book-filled interior of the Drew family home with frame-by-frame precision. The sunny, optimistic palette of small-town American life makes a wonderful contrast with the darker mystery elements. Watch this restored classic film in bright, cheerful color. Historical Significance
Nancy Drew… Reporter is the second of four Warner Bros. Nancy Drew films starring Bonita Granville, produced between 1938 and 1939, based on the enormously popular book series created by publisher Edward Stratemeyer and written under the collective pseudonym Carolyn Keene. The Nancy Drew books, which began publication in 1930, have sold over 80 million copies worldwide and inspired generations of young women to be brave, independent, and intellectually curious. The Warner Bros. films helped establish the template for teen detective stories on screen and paved the way for later adaptations. Bonita Granville’s spirited, independent, and sometimes recklessly brave portrayal of Nancy Drew remains one of the most beloved early screen versions of the character, perfectly capturing the book heroine’s fearlessness and determination. The colorization adds bright visual charm to this classic slice of late-1930s Americana.
