Plot Summary

Haiti, the early 1930s. Madeleine Short (Madge Bellamy) and her fiancé Neil Parker (John Harron) arrive on the island at the invitation of Charles Beaumont (Robert Frazer), a wealthy plantation owner who has offered to host their wedding at his estate. What the young couple does not know is that Beaumont is secretly obsessed with Madeleine and has no intention of allowing the marriage to proceed.

Desperate to possess Madeleine, Beaumont turns to Murder Legendre (Bela Lugosi), the most feared man in Haiti — a voodoo master who controls the local sugar mill with an army of zombies, dead men raised from their graves and enslaved to his will. Legendre’s zombies work ceaselessly in the mill, their blank eyes and mechanical movements creating images of profound horror. Among them are men who were once Legendre’s enemies — a former rival, a former government minister — now reduced to mindless slaves.

Legendre provides Beaumont with a potion that will simulate Madeleine’s death, allowing her to be buried and then raised as a zombie under Beaumont’s control. The plan succeeds: Madeleine appears to die at her own wedding banquet, is entombed, and then rises from her grave — but not as the warm, living woman Beaumont desired. Instead, she is an empty shell, beautiful but soulless, her eyes vacant from any trace of personality or emotion.

Beaumont is horrified by what he has done — possessing Madeleine’s body without her soul is worse than not having her at all. But Legendre has his own plans for Beaumont, gradually transforming the plantation owner himself into a zombie.
