Plot Summary
In seventeenth-century Moldavia, Princess Asa Vajda is condemned as a witch and a vampire by the Holy Inquisition. Before her execution, she swears a terrible curse upon the descendants of her own family — the Vajda line that betrayed her. The executioners hammer a spiked bronze mask — the “Mask of Satan” — onto her face and burn her body. But the rains extinguish the fire before the burning is complete, and Asa is buried in a crypt beneath the family chapel, the mask still fused to her ruined face.
Two centuries later, Dr. Thomas Kruvajan (Andrea Checchi) and his young colleague Dr. Andre Gorobec (John Richardson) are travelling through Moldavia when their carriage breaks down near the ruined Vajda estate. Exploring the crypt, Dr. Kruvajan accidentally breaks the glass window of Asa’s coffin and cuts himself — a drop of his blood falls onto the witch’s desiccated corpse.
The blood awakens Asa. Slowly, terribly, the witch begins to regenerate — her flesh reconstituting itself around the spikes of the mask, her consciousness reaching out to control the living. She reanimates her executed lover Javutich (Arturo Dominici), a towering, cadaverous figure who becomes her instrument of vengeance. Together, they begin systematically destroying the current Vajda family, working toward Asa’s ultimate goal: to drain the life force from Katia — her living double, innocent and beautiful — and use it to restore herself completely.
Dr. Gorobec, who has fallen in love with the ethereal Katia, must fight an enemy that is already dead, understand the ancient curse before it is too late, and distinguish between the innocent maiden and the monstrous witch who wears the same face — a task made desperately difficult by Barbara Steele’s uncanny ability to embody both characters with equal conviction.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?
Bava’s stunning Gothic imagery — the decaying castle, the fog-shrouded graveyard, the torch-lit crypt, the moonlit corridors, the contrast between the warm candlelight of Katia’s chambers and the cold blue darkness of Asa’s tomb — is spectacularly reimagined through expert colorization. The resurrection sequence, with its horrifying detail of regenerating flesh, gains new visceral impact in colour. The Moldavian landscape, the period costumes, and the extraordinary set designs that Bava created on a minimal budget are all beautifully enhanced. Barbara Steele’s pale beauty and dark menace are rendered with stunning clarity. Now also available in colour. Historical Significance
Black Sunday is universally acknowledged as one of the greatest horror films ever made and the film that established Mario Bava as the master of Italian Gothic cinema. Its influence is incalculable — Tim Burton, Francis Ford Coppola, and countless other filmmakers have cited it as a crucial inspiration. Barbara Steele’s dual performance created the template for the “Gothic horror queen” and made her an international icon. The film was so disturbing that it was banned in Britain until 1968, and the American release by AIP was substantially cut. Bava’s visual style — combining expressionist lighting, baroque imagery, and dreamlike pacing — essentially created Italian Gothic horror as a genre and influenced the global horror aesthetic for decades. Through colorization, this landmark horror film has been preserved for modern audiences.
