Plot Summary

Miss Giddens (Deborah Kerr), a sheltered clergyman’s daughter, accepts her first position as governess at Bly, a magnificent but isolated country estate. She has been hired by the children’s wealthy bachelor uncle (Michael Redgrave), who makes one condition absolutely clear: she must handle everything herself and never contact him under any circumstances. At first the assignment seems idyllic — the grounds are beautiful, the housekeeper Mrs. Grose (Megs Jenkins) is welcoming, and the two orphaned children, Miles (Martin Stephens) and his younger sister Flora (Pamela Franklin), are apparently angelic.

But something is deeply wrong. Miles has been expelled from boarding school for reasons the headmaster refuses to specify. Flora speaks to unseen presences by the lake.
