Experience the taut, relentless film noir masterpiece The Narrow Margin (1952) colorized in stunning HD quality. Directed by Richard Fleischer, this lean, brilliantly crafted RKO production is one of the greatest train thrillers ever made — a white-knuckle ride aboard a cross-country passenger train as a tough plainclothes detective (Charles McGraw) escorts a mobster’s widow from Chicago to Los Angeles to testify before a grand jury, while hired killers aboard the same train hunt for the woman to silence her permanently. Shot entirely on a real train with documentary realism, this is film noir stripped to its raw, thrilling essentials. Now available as an instant, DRM-free digital download for only €15.00.

Plot Summary

Detective Walter Brown (Charles McGraw) is assigned the thankless, dangerous job of escorting Mrs. Frankie Neall (Marie Windsor), the widow of a murdered gangster, from Chicago to Los Angeles where she will testify before a grand jury. Mrs. Neall has a list of names that can bring down an entire crime syndicate, and the mob will pay any price to prevent her from reaching that courtroom alive.

From the moment Brown and Mrs. Neall board the train, the tension is relentless. Brown’s partner is murdered at the Chicago station before they even depart, established with brutal efficiency that these killers mean business. On board, Brown must identify which passengers are innocent travellers and which are hit men — and the confined spaces of the train mean there is nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, and every compartment, corridor, and dining car is a potential kill zone.

The claustrophobic setting amplifies every encounter into a potential death trap. Brown spots suspicious men moving through the train but cannot be certain of their intent. A friendly fat man seems harmless — or does he? A beautiful woman travelling alone catches Brown’s eye and his suspicion in equal measure. Mrs. Neall herself is no grateful witness — she is coarse, combative, and openly contemptuous of Brown, making the job of protecting her as unpleasant as it is dangerous. As the train races westward, the killers close in, and a devastating twist midway through the film upends everything the audience thought they knew about who is protecting whom and why.

Cast & Crew

Director: Richard Fleischer
Stars: Charles McGraw is magnificent as the granite-jawed, tough-as-nails detective Brown, his gravelly voice and battered face projecting absolute, unflappable hard-boiled resolve. Marie Windsor is electrifyingly abrasive as the combative Mrs. Neall, creating a genuinely complex character who refuses to be a grateful victim. The supporting cast of suspicious passengers creates an ensemble of paranoia and menace perfectly calibrated to the confined setting.
