Plot Summary
Young, carefree Iris Henderson (Margaret Lockwood) is stranded overnight at a quaint Central European hotel when an avalanche blocks the railway line. In the crowded, chaotic hotel she meets Miss Froy (Dame May Whitty), a sweet, chatty, elderly English governess returning home after years abroad. The two women share tea, pleasant conversation, and board the same train the following morning. Iris, suffering from a bump on the head received at the station, falls asleep and wakes to discover that Miss Froy has completely vanished.
Disturbed and disoriented, Iris begins asking her fellow passengers about the missing woman — but every single person in the compartment denies that Miss Froy ever existed. The Italian magician Doppo (Philip Leaver) insists the seat was always empty. A pair of cricket-obsessed Englishmen, Charters and Caldicott (Naunton Wayne and Basil Radford), claim to have seen nothing. Even a sinister brain surgeon, Dr. Hartz (Paul Lukas), smoothly suggests that Iris is hallucinating from her head injury and that Miss Froy was merely a figment of her concussed imagination.
Only one person believes her: Gilbert (Michael Redgrave), a charming, irreverent young musicologist whom Iris initially found insufferable at the hotel. Together, they launch a frantic investigation through the hurtling train — searching compartments, interrogating hostile passengers, and dodging increasingly dangerous attempts to stop their enquiry. What begins as a missing-person puzzle transforms into a deadly espionage thriller when Gilbert and Iris uncover a sinister international conspiracy. Miss Froy is not merely a sweet old lady — she is a British intelligence agent carrying a vital coded message, and powerful forces aboard the train will resort to murder to ensure she never reaches England alive. The desperate search builds to a spectacular climactic gun battle as the train is diverted to a hostile border station.

Stars: Margaret Lockwood is spirited and resourceful as Iris, the stubborn young socialite who refuses to accept that she imagined an entire person. Michael Redgrave is effortlessly charismatic and winningly roguish in his screen debut as Gilbert. Dame May Whitty is delightful as the deceptively harmless Miss Froy, Paul Lukas is chillingly urbane as Dr. Hartz, and Naunton Wayne and Basil Radford are immortally funny as the cricket-obsessed Charters and Caldicott — characters so popular they were spun off into their own films.
