Plot Summary
Homicide detective Dave Bannion (Glenn Ford) is a dedicated, incorruptible cop living a comfortable suburban life with his loving wife Katie (Jocelyn Brando) and their young daughter when the apparent suicide of a fellow police officer sets him on a path that will destroy everything he holds dear. The dead officer’s widow, sitting on a letter that exposes the corrupt alliance between the police department and crime boss Mike Lagana (Alexander Scourby), demands payment for her silence, and Bannion’s dogged investigation begins uncovering the vast web of corruption that connects Lagana’s criminal empire to the highest levels of city government and the police force itself.
When Bannion confronts Lagana directly and refuses to back down despite threats from his own superiors, the mob retaliates with devastating, irreversible violence — a car bomb meant for Bannion kills his beloved Katie instead, shattering the detective’s orderly world and transforming him from a by-the-book investigator into a relentless, frightening instrument of vengeance who operates outside the law he once served. Bannion’s rage-fueled one-man war against Lagana’s organization leads him to Vince Stone (Lee Marvin), a sadistic, volatile enforcer whose explosive temper masks a coward’s soul. Stone’s girlfriend Debby Marsh (Gloria Grahame) is a wisecracking, fun-loving woman trapped in a relationship with a monster, and when Stone disfigures her beautiful face by hurling a pot of scalding coffee at her in one of the most shocking scenes in 1950s cinema, Debby becomes Bannion’s most unexpected and most dangerous ally. Her transformation from party girl to angel of vengeance, driven by the same fury that consumes Bannion but expressed with a devastating, dark humor that is uniquely her own, provides the film with its emotional and moral center. Fritz Lang builds the tension with merciless precision toward a climax where the question is not whether justice will prevail, but at what terrible cost — and whether a man who has become a mirror of the violence he fights can ever find his way back to the decency he has lost.

Director: Fritz Lang
Stars: Glenn Ford, Gloria Grahame, Lee Marvin, Jeanette Nolan, Alexander Scourby, Jocelyn Brando, Peter Whitney, Willis Bouchey, Robert Burton, Adam Williams
Glenn Ford delivers one of the most powerful performances of his career as Bannion, his transformation from warm family man to cold instrument of vengeance achieved with terrifying conviction. Gloria Grahame is extraordinary as Debby Marsh, her wisecracks and vulnerability creating one of film noir’s most complex and heartbreaking female characters, a woman who finds courage and moral purpose only after being destroyed by the violence she once tolerated. Lee Marvin, in a career-defining supporting role, creates a villain of such explosive, unpredictable menace that he practically invented the modern screen psychopath. Fritz Lang, the legendary German Expressionist master of Metropolis and M, directs with the precision and psychological intensity that marked his entire career.
