Plot Summary
Somewhere in Nazi-occupied Switzerland, Dr. Franz Tobel has invented a revolutionary bombsight that could give whichever nation possesses it a decisive advantage in the aerial war over Europe. The British government desperately needs the device, and the Nazis will stop at nothing to acquire it. Into this deadly situation steps Sherlock Holmes, who travels to Switzerland in disguise to extract both the scientist and his invention before the Gestapo can seize them.
The extraction is a masterpiece of deception — Holmes employs multiple disguises and elaborate misdirection to spirit Tobel out of Switzerland under the very noses of the Nazi agents watching him. But the danger does not end with arrival in London. Professor Moriarty — Holmes’s intellectual equal and moral opposite — has learned of the bombsight and hatched his own plan to acquire it, not out of patriotism for any nation but out of pure, calculated greed.
Tobel, foreseeing exactly this danger, has divided the bombsight into four separate components and entrusted each piece to a different scientist, whose identities he has concealed within an ingeniously coded message. When Tobel is kidnapped by Moriarty’s agents, Holmes must crack the code before the Professor’s men can torture the information from the inventor — or, failing that, locate and eliminate the four scientists one by one.
The battle of wits between Holmes and Moriarty escalates with each passing hour. Moriarty’s network of criminal agents scours London searching for the scattered components, while Holmes deploys his own formidable resources — his mastery of disguise, his network of street informants, and his unparalleled powers of deduction — in a desperate race against time. The trail leads to a final confrontation in Moriarty’s hidden laboratory, where Holmes must face his nemesis in a contest where the stakes are not merely personal but existential.

Historical Significance
Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Weapon was the second in Universal’s wartime Holmes series, which boldly transplanted Conan Doyle’s Victorian detective into the contemporary world of the 1940s. The film draws loosely on “The Adventure of the Dancing Men” for its coded-message subplot, ingeniously adapting a classic Holmes story element to a wartime espionage context. Basil Rathbone’s Holmes — with his famous closing speech paraphrasing Shakespeare — became a symbol of British resolve and intellectual superiority during the darkest days of the war. The film’s depiction of the battle between rational civilisation (Holmes) and amoral opportunism (Moriarty) resonated powerfully with wartime audiences facing a real-world struggle between democracy and fascism. Through colorization, this iconic wartime thriller has been preserved for modern audiences.
