Plot Summary
Mrs. Maddalena Anna Paradine (Alida Valli), a stunningly beautiful woman of mysterious Continental origins, is arrested for the murder of her blind husband, Colonel Paradine, a wealthy, decorated war hero. The evidence is damning: Colonel Paradine died of poison, Mrs. Paradine was the primary beneficiary, and the circumstances strongly suggest premeditation.
Anthony Keane (Gregory Peck), one of London’s most brilliant and successful barristers, takes the case — and within moments of meeting Mrs. Paradine, falls into a devastating infatuation that blinds him to evidence, impairs his legal judgment, and threatens to destroy everything he has built. His wife Gay (Ann Todd), who recognises the infatuation immediately, watches helplessly as her husband’s obsession deepens.
Keane constructs his defence around the theory that Colonel Paradine was actually murdered by his devoted valet, Andre Latour (Louis Jourdan), and that Mrs. Paradine is an innocent victim caught between two men. But Keane’s theory is driven not by evidence but by his desperate need to believe Mrs. Paradine is innocent — because if she is guilty, then the woman he has fallen in love with is a cold-blooded murderess. The trial, presided over by the formidable, morally righteous Lord Thomas Horfield (Charles Laughton), becomes a theatre of devastating revelations as Keane’s strategy collapses, his cross-examination of Latour produces catastrophic consequences, and the truth about Mrs. Paradine — and about Keane’s own self-delusion — is exposed in the most public and humiliating way possible.
Cast & Crew
Director: Alfred Hitchcock
Stars: Gregory Peck conveys the gradual disintegration of a brilliant mind consumed by romantic obsession with powerful restraint. Alida Valli is mesmerizingly opaque as Mrs. Paradine — her beauty and silence create an enigma that Keane fills with his own projections. Charles Laughton is magnificently imposing as the judge whose moral authority masks his own dark desires, and Ann Todd is heartbreakingly dignified as the loyal wife watching her marriage crumble.

Historical Significance
Released in 1947, The Paradine Case was Hitchcock’s final film for producer David O. Selznick and features one of the most distinguished casts ever assembled for a courtroom drama. While not among Hitchcock’s most celebrated works, the film’s exploration of male obsession, self-delusion, and the danger of confusing desire with truth anticipates the themes Hitchcock would develop more fully in Vertigo. Charles Laughton’s performance as the judge is widely considered one of the film’s greatest strengths. Through colorization, this atmospheric Hitchcock courtroom drama is preserved for modern audiences.
