Plot Summary

Marine George Taylor wakes up in a military hospital with no memory of who he is. The only clues to his identity are a letter from a woman named Christy and a second letter from a man named Larry Cravat — both of them hate him. Discharged into the chaos of postwar Los Angeles, Taylor begins a desperate search for his own past, tracing the name Larry Cravat through the city’s underworld of nightclubs, crooked bathhouses, and shadowy figures. Every lead draws him deeper into a web of murder, stolen money, and wartime betrayal. Along the way he meets Christy Smith, a beautiful nightclub singer who may hold the key to his forgotten identity, and Mel Phillips, a sinister figure with his own reasons for hunting Larry Cravat. As Taylor pieces together the fragments of his shattered memory, he discovers that the truth about who he was may be more dangerous than not knowing at all. The noir atmosphere thickens with every revelation, as Taylor realizes that the man he used to be may have committed terrible acts that he can no longer remember. This classic movie is a gripping film noir about identity, guilt, and redemption in postwar America, exploring the psychological cost of war on those who survived it.

Historical Significance

Somewhere in the Night was an early directorial effort by Joseph L. Mankiewicz, who would go on to win consecutive Best Director Oscars for A Letter to Three Wives and All About Eve. The amnesia-noir storyline anticipated many later thrillers, and the film’s exploration of postwar disorientation and identity crisis reflects the real psychological trauma experienced by returning veterans. The film features strong performances from a cast of character actors who defined the noir era, and its atmospheric portrayal of postwar Los Angeles stands alongside the best of the genre. Through colorization, this atmospheric thriller finds new audiences who can appreciate its visual sophistication and narrative complexity.
