Plot Summary

Nineteenth-century Japan, the final years of the Tokugawa shogunate. A nameless ronin (Toshiro Mifune), a masterless samurai wandering with nothing but his sword and his wit, arrives at a small provincial town and immediately senses trouble. The streets are deserted, shutters are drawn, and the only life in the main road is a stray dog trotting past with a human hand clenched in its jaws.

The town is controlled by two rival gangs locked in a vicious power struggle. On one side is Seibei, a silk merchant turned crime boss, flanked by his ambitious wife and a small army of thugs. On the other side is Ushitora, a sake brewer whose gang includes his fearsome brother Unosuke — a young hothead who carries a pistol, a weapon that gives him a terrifying advantage in an era of swords. The two factions have reduced the town to a wasteland, with honest merchants and craftsmen cowering in fear while the gangsters posture and scheme.

The ronin, who improvises the name “Sanjuro” (meaning “thirty-year-old” — actually he says he is closer to forty), quickly assesses the situation with the amused cynicism of a man who has seen too much human stupidity. Rather than picking a side, he devises a brilliantly simple strategy: he will sell his services to both gangs simultaneously, manipulating each into attacking the other until both are destroyed.

Sanjuro moves between the two camps with breathtaking audacity, offering his formidable swordsmanship first to one boss, then the other, feeding each side misinformation and calculated provocations. His fighting ability is established in an early scene of such casual, explosive violence that both gangs are desperate to recruit him. The scheme works beautifully — until Sanjuro’s hidden compassion gets him into trouble. When he secretly frees a woman who has been enslaved by Ushitora’s gang, his deception is discovered, and he is captured and brutally beaten. His escape, recovery, and return for a final devastating reckoning form the film’s magnificent climax.

Toshiro Mifune’s performance as Sanjuro is one of the most iconic in cinema history. His ronin is a masterwork of physical acting — the exaggerated shoulder-rolling walk, the constant scratching, the explosive bursts of lethal swordsmanship — creating a character who combines deadpan humour with terrifying combat ability. Tatsuya Nakadai is riveting as Unosuke, the pistol-wielding villain whose modern weapon threatens to upset the sword-based balance of power.

Historical Significance

Yojimbo is one of the most influential films in cinema history, creating the template for the lone-stranger-cleans-up-a-corrupt-town narrative that has been replicated countless times across cultures and genres. Sergio Leone’s A Fistful of Dollars (1964) was such a direct adaptation that Kurosawa successfully sued for copyright infringement, and the influence extends through Walter Hill’s Last Man Standing and countless other films. Kurosawa drew his own inspiration from Dashiell Hammett’s Red Harvest and the American Western genre, creating a fascinating cross-cultural cycle of influence. The film’s revolutionary action choreography established a new standard for screen combat, and Masaru Sato’s jazz-inflected score brought an unexpected modernity to the period setting. Through colorization, this towering action masterpiece has been preserved for modern audiences in a spectacular new visual presentation.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Movie-Specific Questions

Q: Is this the film that inspired A Fistful of Dollars?
A: Yes. Sergio Leone’s 1964 Clint Eastwood Western was such a direct copy of Yojimbo that Kurosawa successfully sued. The Man with No Name character is essentially Mifune’s Sanjuro transplanted to the American frontier, demonstrating the universal appeal of Kurosawa’s creation.

Q: Is the film in Japanese?
A: Yes. The film is in Japanese with English subtitles. The original-language soundtrack preserves Mifune’s extraordinary physical performance and vocal delivery, which are integral to the character’s legendary status in cinema history.

Q: Is there a sequel?
A: Yes. Kurosawa made Sanjuro (1962) the following year, featuring Mifune reprising the character. While the films stand completely independently, Sanjuro is an excellent companion piece that further develops the ronin character in an equally entertaining context.
