Plot Summary
In feudal Japan, the Akizuki clan has been destroyed by the rival Yamana clan, and its last treasures — a fortune in gold and the surviving Princess Yukihime (Misa Uehara) — are hidden deep in enemy territory. General Rokurota Makabe (Toshirō Mifune), the clan’s greatest warrior, must escort the princess and the gold through hostile lands to safety in a friendly province. To do so, he needs porters who will not betray them.
He finds them in Tahei (Minoru Chiaki) and Matashichi (Kamatari Fujiwara), two greedy, cowardly, constantly bickering peasants who have been wandering the war-torn countryside in search of fortune. Makabe cleverly tricks them into carrying the gold — hidden inside wooden sticks — by promising them a share of the treasure. The peasants have no idea they are escorting a princess or serving a fugitive general; they are simply following the gold.
The journey becomes an extraordinary adventure across mountains, forests, and enemy checkpoints. Makabe’s martial skill protects the group from soldiers and bandits, while Yukihime — a fierce, proud young woman who has never experienced the world outside her palace — discovers compassion, courage, and the reality of her people’s suffering. The peasants provide constant comic relief through their selfishness and cowardice, yet gradually reveal deeper humanity.
The group faces increasingly dangerous challenges: enemy patrols, treacherous mountain passes, a fire festival where they must hide in plain sight among enemy soldiers, and a spectacular confrontation between Makabe and his rival, the Yamana general Hyoe Tadokoro (Susumu Fujita). Through cunning, courage, and the unexpected loyalty of the most unlikely allies, the mission reaches its thrilling conclusion.
