Plot Summary

Los Angeles, late at night. Cheryl Draper (Barbara Stanwyck), an attractive and independent commercial artist, is unable to sleep and stands at her apartment window looking out over the city. In the apartment directly across the way, she sees something horrifying: a man strangling a woman to death. Cheryl immediately calls the police.

Detective Larry Mathews (Gary Merrill) and his partner respond quickly, but when they investigate the apartment belonging to Albert Richter (George Sanders), they find nothing. No body, no sign of a struggle, no evidence that anything untoward has occurred. Richter is smooth, cultured, and convincingly bewildered by the accusation. He is a respected writer and intellectual with no criminal record and an impeccable reputation. He suggests with gentle sympathy that Miss Draper must have had a vivid nightmare.
