Plot Summary
Myra Hudson is a wealthy, successful, and supremely confident Broadway playwright who exercises her power during casting by personally rejecting the handsome young actor Lester Blaine from her latest production, coldly telling him he simply lacks the romantic appeal the role demands. Fate intervenes with cruel irony when they meet again by chance aboard a luxury train from New York to San Francisco, and this time — away from the professional setting, charmed by his attentiveness and apparent vulnerability — Myra falls completely and recklessly under Lester’s spell. Their whirlwind romance leads to a rapid marriage, and Myra is blissfully, almost dangerously happy in her magnificent San Francisco home with her handsome, attentive new husband who seems devoted to her every comfort. She is so deeply in love that she begins revising her will to leave everything to Lester, not knowing that this is precisely what he has been counting on from the beginning. Myra’s carefully constructed world shatters into a million pieces when she accidentally discovers a dictaphone recording — one she was never meant to hear — that reveals the horrifying truth: Lester and his former girlfriend Irene Neves, a seductive, calculating woman, have been conspiring together all along in a cold-blooded scheme. Lester married Myra solely for her enormous fortune, and now the lovers are plotting to murder her before she can change her will, staging her death to look like an accident so they can inherit everything and live together on her money. Terrified, betrayed, and devastated by the depth of the deception, Myra must summon every ounce of her formidable intelligence and her playwright’s gift for constructing intricate plots to turn the tables on her would-be murderers. In a desperate, nerve-shredding race against the clock through the fog-shrouded streets of nighttime San Francisco, she devises an elaborate counter-plan that is as breathtakingly dangerous as it is ingeniously theatrical — using her knowledge of Lester’s schedule and weaknesses to create a trap that could either save her life or seal her doom. This classic movie is a masterful, white-knuckle thriller that builds almost unbearable suspense through psychological manipulation, betrayal, and a heroine whose greatest weapon is her brilliant, creative mind.
Cast & Crew
Director: David Miller
Stars: Joan Crawford, Jack Palance, Gloria Grahame, Bruce Bennett, Virginia Huston, Touch Connors
Joan Crawford delivers one of the finest performances of her extraordinary career as Myra Hudson, transforming from a confident, powerful woman intoxicated by love into a terrified but resourceful prey who fights back with devastating intelligence. Crawford’s face — always one of cinema’s most expressive instruments — conveys entire novels of emotion during the devastating dictaphone scene and the harrowing nighttime sequences that follow. Jack Palance is chillingly effective as Lester Blaine, bringing a dangerous physical magnetism and barely concealed predatory instinct to the handsome fortune hunter whose charm masks a killer’s cold calculation. Gloria Grahame is perfectly cast as the seductive, amoral Irene Neves, bringing her trademark blend of sensuality and casual cruelty to the other woman who has no qualms about murder.
