Plot Summary

Myra Savage is a self-proclaimed spiritual medium who conducts seances in her dimly lit suburban London home for a small circle of faithful clients. She is utterly convinced of her psychic powers, particularly her ability to communicate with the spirit of her dead son Arthur, who she believes guides her from the hereafter. But Myra is tortured by the fact that the wider world does not recognize her extraordinary gifts — she is consumed by a desperate need for public validation and acclaim.

Myra devises a monstrous plan. She will orchestrate the kidnapping of a wealthy family’s young daughter, Amanda Clayton, and then approach the police as a psychic who has received spirit communications about the missing child. By gradually revealing accurate details about the kidnapping — details she knows because she planned the crime — Myra will demonstrate her psychic abilities to the world and finally achieve the recognition she has been denied.

To carry out her plan, Myra needs her husband Billy, a timid, passive man who is completely dominated by his wife’s powerful personality and her claims of spiritual authority. Billy is horrified by the scheme but lacks the will to resist Myra, who uses a combination of emotional manipulation, spiritual coercion, and implied threats to bend him to her purpose. Billy carries out the kidnapping while Myra manages every detail from their home.

The plan initially proceeds as designed, but the reality of holding a frightened child captive, the intensity of the police investigation, and the growing danger of discovery begin to unravel both the scheme and the Savages’ fragile hold on sanity. As the tension mounts inexorably, the boundary between Myra’s delusions and reality blurs, leading to a devastating conclusion that exposes the full tragic horror of what obsession and madness have wrought.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?

The colorization of Seance on a Wet Afternoon transforms this psychological masterpiece into a visually atmospheric experience — the oppressive gloom of the Savages’ darkened parlour with its heavy drapes and guttering candles, the sickly green and brown of the rain-soaked suburban streets, the pale and fevered intensity of Kim Stanley’s face during the seance scenes, the warm domestic normality of the Clayton household contrasting with the cold dread of the kidnapping, the grey English rain that seems to permeate every frame, Billy’s anxious pallor, the dim amber of gaslight and candles, the institutional green of police station interiors, the overall oppressive atmosphere of damp, darkness, and creeping madness.
