Plot Summary

Steve Raleigh (Robert Taylor) has a problem: he loves horse racing more than is financially prudent, and his prize horse Stargazer needs to win the big race if his Broadway ambitions are to survive. His plan is to produce a spectacular new show β€” if only he can secure the backing, the cast, and the leading lady he needs.

Sally Lee (Eleanor Powell) is a dedicated dancer determined to land the lead in Steve’s production, working nights as a diner waitress to stay in New York and keep auditioning. Working against them both is the scheming socialite Caroline Whipple (Binnie Barnes), who controls the show’s finances and wants to use the production for her own less-talented protΓ©gΓ©e.

Caught in the middle of this theatrical chaos is young Betty Clayton (Judy Garland), daughter of Sophie Tucker’s boisterous show-business veteran Alice Clayton (Sophie Tucker). Betty is a teenager with an astonishing voice and a gift for emotional performance that nobody in the film β€” except perhaps the audience β€” fully recognizes yet. When Betty performs “You Made Me Love You (I Didn’t Want to Do It)” addressed to a photograph of Clark Gable, with new lyrics specially written for the occasion, the entire film momentarily stops and surrenders to something extraordinary. It was one of the most important moments in Hollywood musical history: the moment the world realized Judy Garland was a star.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?

Broadway Melody of 1938 is essential viewing for two reasons that need no qualification: Eleanor Powell’s extraordinary tap dancing, and a fifteen-year-old Judy Garland delivering one of the most emotionally affecting musical performances in Hollywood history. Either one would justify owning this classic film. Together, they make it indispensable.

The colorization process uses advanced digital techniques to ensure historically accurate colors while preserving every detail of the original cinematography.

Originally filmed in black and white, this classic film has been professionally restored and colorized to reveal the full grandeur of MGM’s production ambitions. The grand theatrical sets glow with the rich, warm color of 1930s Technicolor imagination, the elaborate costumes shimmer and catch the light, and the polished dance floors reflect Eleanor Powell’s tap work with new visual precision. The big finale production number, which used multiple cameras simultaneously to capture Powell’s footwork from every angle, is staggeringly impressive in colorized HD.

Judy Garland’s scene performing “You Made Me Love You” to a photograph of Clark Gable is rendered with particular care in this colorized version. Her youth, her extraordinary natural technique, her emotional transparency β€” all of it reads with new immediacy in color, and it is impossible to watch without understanding that you are witnessing the beginning of one of American entertainment’s greatest careers. Two years later she would star in The Wizard of Oz.

Sophie Tucker brings the authentic warmth and authority of genuine show-business royalty to her role as Alice Clayton, and her scenes with Judy Garland have the easy natural quality of a real mother-daughter rapport. Robert Taylor’s matinee charm and George Murphy’s good-natured energy complete an ensemble that makes the film’s theatrical backstage world feel genuinely inhabited.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is Judy Garland’s famous scene in this film?
A fifteen-year-old Judy Garland performs “You Made Me Love You (I Didn’t Want to Do It)” addressed to a photograph of Clark Gable, with an extra verse of lyrics specially written for the occasion by Roger Edens. The song had been a hit for Al Jolson in 1913, but Garland’s performance reimagined it entirely β€” with such emotional truth and natural vocal mastery that it transformed her from a secondary supporting player to a genuine MGM star property. The film’s producer Arthur Freed went immediately to Louis B. Mayer after seeing the rushes and insisted that Garland be cast in The Wizard of Oz.

Who is Eleanor Powell and why is she significant?
Eleanor Powell is widely considered the greatest female tap dancer in film history. Her technique combined classical ballet training, jazz rhythms, and an almost superhuman precision and speed. In Broadway Melody of 1938, her big finale number deployed multiple cameras to capture her footwork from multiple angles simultaneously β€” a tribute to the fact that her dancing was too intricate to be adequately captured from a single position. Fred Astaire, who danced with Powell in Broadway Melody of 1940, called her performance in that film the greatest tap dancing he had ever seen from a partner.

Who is Sophie Tucker?
Sophie Tucker was one of the most famous entertainers in America in the 1930s β€” known as “The Last of the Red Hot Mamas” β€” a singer, comedian, and show-business personality who had been performing since the early days of vaudeville. Her presence in Broadway Melody of 1938 alongside a teenage Judy Garland creates a fascinating juxtaposition of two generations of American entertainment talent: the unstoppable force of the old vaudeville world meeting the revolutionary new star of Hollywood’s golden age.

Is this the complete original 1937 film?
Yes. The full 110-minute 1937 MGM original, professionally colorized frame by frame with no cuts or alterations. Every performance β€” including Judy Garland’s iconic scene β€” preserved exactly as filmed.
