Plot Summary
In the early 1800s, Jean Lafitte (Fredric March) rules the waters of the Gulf of Mexico from his stronghold in the bayous of Barataria, near New Orleans. A cultured, educated Frenchman who operates as both pirate and smuggler, Lafitte commands a fleet of ships and the fierce loyalty of a diverse crew. Though he preys on merchant vessels, he has one absolute rule: no American ships are to be attacked.
When the British arrive in force to challenge American sovereignty in the War of 1812, they seek Lafitte as an ally, offering him wealth and a commission in the Royal Navy if he will guide their fleet through the treacherous bayou passages to attack New Orleans from behind. Lafitte, despite his outlaw status, considers himself more American than British and secretly contacts General Andrew Jackson (Hugh Sothern) with intelligence about the British plans.
Jackson is suspicious of the pirate’s motives, and the American governor orders an attack on Barataria. Lafitte’s stronghold is destroyed and his men scattered, but the pirate’s intelligence proves correct — the British are indeed preparing a massive assault on New Orleans. With no other option, Jackson reluctantly accepts Lafitte’s offer of assistance, and the pirates of Barataria join the American defenders.
Meanwhile, Lafitte rescues a beautiful Dutch girl, Gretchen (Franciska Gaal), from one of his own ships, a complication that tests both his authority over his men and his own feelings. As the Battle of New Orleans approaches, Lafitte must balance his love for Gretchen, his loyalty to his crew, and his duty to the adopted country that has declared him an outlaw. The climactic battle sequence, directed with DeMille’s trademark grandeur, is a stirring spectacle of courage and sacrifice.

Historical Significance
The Buccaneer stands as one of Cecil B. DeMille’s finest achievements of the 1930s, a grand-scale historical epic produced at the height of the studio system’s power. Fredric March, already one of Hollywood’s most respected actors with Academy Awards for Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931) and The Best Years of Our Lives (1946), gives a commanding lead performance. The film tells the historically significant story of the Battle of New Orleans (1815), the final major battle of the War of 1812, and the remarkable role played by the pirate Jean Lafitte in the American victory. DeMille later produced a 1958 remake directed by Anthony Quinn, but many consider this 1938 original the superior version.
