Plot Summary

Eddie Pink is a hopelessly timid, anxious young man who somehow finds himself managing a small-town amusement park that has fallen on hard times — its rides are creaking, its attractions are fading, and its customers have been dwindling for years. Desperate to transform himself from a shrinking violet into the bold, decisive leader the park needs, Eddie devours a popular self-help book that promises to unleash the dormant lion within any meek soul. Armed with this newfound but comically fragile courage, Eddie begins strutting around the park making bold pronouncements and ambitious improvements, his bravado lasting exactly as long as nobody challenges him. Things get dangerously complicated when a ruthless gang of racketeers, led by the menacing crime boss Butch Copeland, decides that the amusement park is the perfect front for an illegal gambling operation and moves in to take control through intimidation and force. Eddie, through a combination of accidental heroism and genuine pluck, becomes the unlikely obstacle standing between the gangsters and their plans. His situation becomes even more chaotic when the gorgeous, brassy nightclub singer Joyce Lennox arrives at the park and turns every head in the place — including Eddie’s, though he can barely string two words together in her overwhelming presence. Joyce, however, is not just a beautiful distraction: she’s sharp, fearless, and perfectly willing to stand up to gangsters when the men around her are cowering. With the help of his loyal but bewildered employees, the fiery and fearless Joyce, and the principles from his self-help book applied in increasingly absurd ways, Eddie must outsmart the dangerous criminals, save the park from being turned into a gambling den, and prove that true courage isn’t about the absence of fear but about doing what’s right despite being absolutely terrified. Along the way, elaborate and spectacular musical numbers, wild slapstick chases through the amusement park’s rides, and Eddie’s trademark rubber-faced physical comedy transform a seemingly simple story into a riotous, dazzling spectacle. This classic movie is a showcase for one of Hollywood’s greatest comedians at the peak of his powers, paired with the incomparable Ethel Merman at her most magnetic.

Eddie Cantor is in top form as the hopelessly timid Eddie Pink, deploying his extraordinary physical comedy, famous rolling eyes, and impeccable comic timing to create one of his most endearing screen characters. Cantor had a unique gift for making cowardice hilarious while still making the audience root for his character, and his transformation from quivering weakling to accidental hero is comedy gold.
