Plot Summary
Bob Benton is a charming, carefree young man-about-town whose comfortable lifestyle is entirely funded by his wealthy, domineering Aunt Hortense. When the formidable old woman grows tired of her nephew’s aimless bachelorhood and issues an ultimatum — get married within thirty days or be permanently cut off from the family fortune — Bob finds himself in a desperate predicament. He enjoys his freedom far too much to actually settle down, but he cannot imagine surviving without his aunt’s generous allowance.
Desperate to keep his inheritance flowing without actually committing to a real marriage, Bob concocts what he believes is a foolproof scheme: he will find a sensible, practical woman willing to enter a strictly business arrangement — a marriage on paper only, with no romantic obligations, no emotional entanglement, and a quiet annulment once the aunt is satisfied. He finds the perfect candidate in the beautiful, sharp-witted Helen Warner, a smart, independent young woman who has her own pressing financial reasons for accepting the unconventional proposal. They shake hands on the deal like two business partners rather than newlyweds.
But what begins as a simple, straightforward contractual arrangement quickly becomes wonderfully, chaotically complicated when genuine feelings start to develop between the phony husband and wife. Living together under one roof, sharing meals, arguing over domestic details, and presenting a convincing front to the sharp-eyed aunt, they discover a natural chemistry and growing affection that neither expected nor wanted. Meanwhile, Bob’s glamorous former flame refuses to accept that he has moved on and launches a campaign to break up the marriage. Other romantic entanglements, jealous rivals, and comic misunderstandings create a farcical tangle of confusion that threatens to expose the entire sham. As the pretend couple struggles to maintain their increasingly fragile charade in front of the suspicious, omnipresent Aunt Hortense, they are forced to confront the delicious irony that playing at marriage has made them realize they desperately want the real thing after all.

Historical Significance
Slightly Married is a delightful example of early 1930s pre-Code comedy, produced during the brief period when Hollywood could address romance, sexuality, and unconventional relationships with a frankness and sophistication that the strict Production Code would soon prohibit. Director Richard Thorpe, who would go on to a long and prolific career at MGM directing everything from Tarzan films to Elvis Presley musicals, demonstrates his natural gift for light comedy and efficient storytelling. The film features Marie Prevost, a popular silent-film star successfully transitioning to talkies, and Jason Robards Sr., father of the future two-time Oscar winner. Through professional colorization, this breezy pre-Code romantic comedy reaches new audiences.
