Plot Summary
Harold ‘Speedy’ Swift is a lovable but hopelessly unreliable young man in New York City who cannot hold a job because of his obsession with baseball and the New York Yankees. His long-suffering girlfriend Jane is patient, but her grandfather Pop Dillon has bigger problems — he operates the last horse-drawn streetcar line in Manhattan, and a powerful transit company is desperate to seize his franchise. The crooked company will stop at nothing, including sabotage and intimidation, to force Pop out of business. When Speedy realizes that Pop’s franchise will expire unless the streetcar makes at least one run per day, he springs into action. In a madcap race against time, Speedy must drive the rickety horse-drawn car through the chaotic streets of 1920s New York while fending off hired thugs, navigating traffic jams, and surviving one hair-raising mishap after another. The climactic chase through the streets of Manhattan is one of the most spectacular action sequences in silent comedy, with Harold Lloyd performing death-defying stunts amid real traffic and pedestrians. Along the way, he takes Babe Ruth on a wild taxi ride through Manhattan that is one of the most famous comedy sequences in silent film history. This classic movie is a joyous celebration of New York City and one of Harold Lloyd’s greatest comedies, preserving a vanished world of horse-drawn streetcars and roaring twenties energy.

Historical Significance
Speedy was Harold Lloyd’s last silent film and features remarkable location footage of 1920s New York City, including Coney Island, the Lower East Side, and the real Yankee Stadium during an actual game. Babe Ruth appears as himself in one of the earliest celebrity cameos in film history, and his scenes with Lloyd crackle with spontaneous energy. The film preserves a vanished New York that no longer exists — the horse-drawn streetcars, the old neighborhoods, and the street life of a city on the cusp of the modern age.
