Plot Summary

George is a cheerful, good-natured young man who works as a stable hand at a racing stud farm. While George is enthusiastic and well-meaning, his natural talent for creating chaos through innocent incompetence makes him something of a liability to his employers. What George lacks in coordination, however, he makes up for in an extraordinary gift: he has a remarkable ability to calm nervous and temperamental horses through singing and gentle handling.

This talent becomes critically important when the stable acquires a magnificent but impossibly difficult racehorse β€” an animal of tremendous potential that is too wild and unpredictable for any of the professional jockeys to handle. The horse responds to no one β€” except George. When George sings to the animal and approaches it with his characteristic mix of nervousness and warmth, the horse becomes calm, obedient, and eager to run.

George is pressed into service as the horse’s handler and, through a series of comic circumstances, finds himself entered as the jockey in an important race. This does not sit well with a group of crooked bookmakers who have invested heavily in fixing the race and stand to lose a fortune if George’s horse wins.

The bookmakers plot to prevent George from riding. George must navigate their increasingly elaborate schemes to stop him β€” which involve kidnapping, sabotage, and a variety of traps β€” while simultaneously dealing with his romantic feelings for a young woman connected to the racing establishment and the constant interference of well-meaning but unhelpful friends.

The climax builds through a series of brilliantly choreographed comic chases and escapes as George fights to reach the racecourse in time, with the fate of the race, the romance, and the villains’ scheming all hanging in the balance.

Historical Significance

Come on George! was one of the biggest box office hits of 1939 British cinema and helped cement George Formby’s position as the most popular and commercially successful film star in Britain β€” a distinction he held throughout the late 1930s and early 1940s. Formby’s appeal was unique: a Lancashire working-class comedian whose innocent, bumbling screen persona, combined with his virtuoso ukulele playing and cheeky songs, made him beloved by audiences of all ages and backgrounds. His films consistently outperformed Hollywood imports at the British box office, a remarkable achievement during Hollywood’s golden age. The horse racing setting of Come on George! allowed Formby to combine his physical comedy skills with spectacular action sequences, and the film’s climactic race remains one of the most exciting sequences in British comedy cinema of the era. The film also features several of Formby’s most memorable musical performances, showcasing the banjo-ukulele playing that made him a unique figure in entertainment history.
